The South Korean national football team will compete for a spot in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North, Central America, and the Caribbean against Mexico, South Africa, and the winner of the European Playoff (PO).

South Korea was drawn into Group A along with Mexico, South Africa, and the winner of European Playoff Pass D at the North, Central America, and Caribbean World Cup draw ceremony held at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., USA, on December 6th (Korean time).

Denmark, North Macedonia, Czech Republic, and Ireland are competing in European Playoff Pass D.

The winner of the match between the Czech Republic and Ireland will face the winner of the match between Denmark and North Macedonia (both on March 26th next year, local time) on March 31st to determine the qualified team.

South Korea's match venues have also been decided.

On June 12th next year, Korean time, South Korea will play their first match against the winner of European Playoff Pass D at the Akron Stadium in Guadalajara, Mexico, and on June 19th, they will face Mexico at the same venue.

They will then play their third match against South Africa on June 25th at the BBVA Stadium in Monterrey.

The teams in Group A will play all three of their matches in Mexico without traveling to other countries.

Detailed schedules, including match times, will be announced at 2 AM on December 7th, the following day.

The 2026 tournament, the 23rd World Cup, will be held from June 11th to July 19th next year across 16 stadiums in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

This tournament, which will be held in multiple countries for the second time after the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup and spans the widest continental area in history, is the first World Cup to be expanded from 32 to 48 participating nations.

The teams will be divided into 12 groups of four teams for the group stage, and the top two teams from each group, along with the eight best third-place teams, will advance to a 32-team knockout tournament to determine the champion.

The South Korean team, led by coach Hong Myung-bo, secured their ticket to North, Central America, and the Caribbean by finishing first in their group of six teams with 22 points from 6 wins and 4 draws in the third round of Asian qualifiers, remaining undefeated.

South Korea, making their 11th consecutive and 12th overall World Cup appearance since the 1986 Mexico tournament, aims to achieve their best-ever performance in an away tournament by reaching the quarterfinals.

This draw outcome is not unfavorable for South Korea.

By being placed in a host nation's group, they have avoided all the top-seeded favorites like Spain, France, Argentina, England, and Brazil from Pot 1.

Additionally, facing South Africa, the lowest-ranked team in Pot 3, is a positive factor.

However, the uncertainty of which European team they will face, which will only be known after the playoff in March next year, remains a variable.

If avoiding the European Playoff Pass A, which includes Italy, can be considered 'a blessing in disguise,' then facing Mexico, the most formidable opponent among the host nations, could be described as 'a misfortune in disguise.'

Mexico, ranked 15th, is the second-lowest ranked team among the Pot 1 nations, following Canada (27th).

However, Mexico, known for their high work rate and spirited play, is a team that can display formidable performance when they gain momentum.

South Korea trails Mexico in their all-time record with 4 wins, 3 draws, and 8 losses.

They have lost both of their previous encounters in the World Cup.

They lost 1-3 in the group stage of the 1998 France World Cup and 1-2 in the group stage of the 2018 Russia World Cup.

In their most recent encounter in September, played in the United States, South Korea and Mexico drew 2-2.

South Africa is an 'unknown opponent' as South Korea has never faced them before.

This marks South Africa's return to the World Cup finals for the first time in 16 years, since the 2010 tournament held in their home country.

South Africa has participated in the World Cup finals three times and has never advanced past the group stage.

However, this South African team should not be underestimated, as they secured their qualification by topping their group in the African qualifiers, ahead of traditional powerhouse Nigeria.

Among the European Playoff Pass D teams, Denmark (21st), Czech Republic (44th), Ireland (59th), and North Macedonia (65th) have the highest rankings.

If North Macedonia, the lowest-ranked team, were to qualify for the finals, it would be a welcome result for South Korea, Mexico, and South Africa.

The fate of the qualified nations was placed in the hands of legends from America's four major professional sports.

Aaron Judge of Major League Baseball (MLB) (New York Yankees), Shaquille O'Neal of the National Basketball Association (NBA), Wayne Gretzky of the National Hockey League (NHL), and Tom Brady of the National Football League (NFL) (all retired) took the stage to draw the balls.

O'Neal was responsible for the bowl containing the balls for Pot 2, which included South Korea.

The newly established FIFA Peace Prize was awarded to U.S. President Donald Trump.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino showed great respect to President Trump, announcing his attendance upon taking the stage and dedicating a lengthy 12 minutes to the FIFA Peace Prize award ceremony.
