Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado (58) plans to attend the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in Oslo, Norway, on December 10th, despite threats of arrest from the government.

On December 6th (local time), Christian Berg Harpviken, Director of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, stated, "I contacted Machado directly last night, and she confirmed she will be in Oslo for the ceremony."

Machado's specific travel plans were not disclosed due to security concerns.

The Venezuelan Prosecutor's Office had previously warned that Machado would be considered an "absconding fugitive" if she left the country to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.

Machado, who has been at the forefront of the democratization movement resisting the iron-fisted rule of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, faces charges in her home country of conspiracy, incitement to hatred, and terrorism.

Machado also attempted to run for president against Maduro in 2024 but was unable to participate in the election due to a widespread crackdown on the opposition by the government, and has since been in hiding and continuing her struggle within the country.

Ahead of the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony, Machado's supporters held rallies in various locations around the world, including Madrid, Spain, and Utrecht, Netherlands, on this day.

The Maduro regime is currently facing its greatest crisis, with the U.S. Trump administration recently designating the Venezuelan regime as a "drug cartel" and deploying a large military force in the Caribbean.

Following her selection as a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Machado expressed gratitude, stating, "I thank President Trump for his work towards global peace," and recently agreed with the U.S. assessment that President Maduro leads a drug cartel, welcoming the increased U.S. military presence.
