The first exhibition in Korea of the British painter Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851) will be held in Gyeongju.

The Wooyang Museum of Art in Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do, announced on the 15th that it will host ‘Turner: In Light and Shade’ from the 17th to May 25th of next year, commemorating the 250th anniversary of Turner's birth.

This exhibition, held in collaboration with the Whitworth Art Gallery at the University of Manchester, will showcase a total of 86 prints and paintings by Turner.

Turner is a representative British landscape painter who has inspired numerous artists across generations.

The face of Turner and his representative work, ‘The Fighting Temeraire,’ are featured on Britain's 20-pound note (approximately 30,000 won). The Turner Prize, named after him, is Britain's most prestigious contemporary art award.

Turner traveled across Europe and created a series of prints called ‘Liber Studiorum’ based on his landscape sketches. Seventy-one of these were published in book form.

This exhibition brings together all 71 of these landscape prints, marking the first time in 100 years that the Whitworth has presented ‘Liber Studiorum’ to the public.

In addition to his landscape prints, masterpieces of watercolor paintings from the Whitworth's collection will also be displayed.

A representative from the Wooyang Museum of Art explained, "This will be an opportunity to appreciate the trio of line, light and shade, and space in Turner's landscapes," adding, "The key point is to observe how Turner's unique expression of color and atmosphere is varied in the medium of printmaking."
