Fred Fleitz stated in an interview with Newsmax on Monday that threatening social media posts from Dmitry Medvedev, the Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council, reflect Moscow's desperation after a strong show of unity between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Fleitz made his remarks on the program "American Agenda" in response to a post Medvedev made on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday. In the post, Medvedev harshly criticized Zelenskyy with vulgar language, warning the Ukrainian leader that he "should hide and remain silent for the rest of his miserable life."

The comments came shortly after Zelenskyy met with Trump at Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate on Sunday.

"This tweet seemed desperate to me," Fleitz, who served as National Security Council (NSC) Director of Staff during Trump's first term, said. "There was really good news for Ukraine yesterday. The relationship between Trump and Zelenskyy is stronger than ever."

Fleitz said that Trump sent an important message in the meeting by signaling that he would not set artificial deadlines for negotiations to end the war.

Trump had previously mentioned the possibility of setting Thanksgiving or this month as a deadline, but has now stepped back from that approach.

"Trump made a very important statement that there are no deadlines," Fleitz said. "He is now sending a message to Putin that 'if Zelenskyy sticks to the game plan, I'm with him, and you cannot make me wait.'"

According to Fleitz, this shift undermines Russia's core strategy of prolonging the conflict by hoping Western support for Ukraine will weaken.

He argued that Medvedev's comments were evidence that Russia viewed the rapprochement between the U.S. and Ukraine as a setback.

"This is very good news for Ukraine," Fleitz said.

Despite the recent diplomatic momentum, Fleitz warned that a negotiated settlement remains difficult and is unlikely to happen quickly.

"Peace building is difficult. It's a tough process," he said. "It will take multiple rounds of negotiations. I don't think peace is right around the corner."

Nevertheless, Fleitz said that continued cooperation between the U.S., Europe, and Ukraine could increase pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"If the U.S. and Europe and Ukraine move in lockstep, that will put much greater pressure on Putin," Fleitz said, adding that he hoped it would lead to a ceasefire.
