U.S. President Donald Trump said on the 2nd (local time) that the United States will intervene if Iran "kills peaceful protesters."

Trump wrote on Truth Social early this morning, "If Iran commits the violent act of shooting and killing peaceful protesters, which is their practice, the United States will go to their rescue. We are fully prepared and can mobilize immediately. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President Donald J. Trump."

The Hill reported that Iran saw its largest protests since 2022 over the weekend, protesting deteriorating economic conditions as its currency collapsed. In 2022, protests erupted after the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody.

The human rights group Hengaw stated on Thursday (1st) that Iranian authorities have detained at least 29 protesters during the demonstrations. According to the Far News Agency, an Iranian police station was attacked on Thursday, resulting in at least three deaths and 17 injuries.

Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) said on Friday that "the vast majority of the Iranian people want freedom, a government that respects individual liberties, and a peaceful country with its neighbors." He wrote on X, "The Iranian people have been abused by their own government for too long."

Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, shared Trump's X post on Friday, stating, "With the statements of Israeli officials and Donald Trump, it is now clear what has been happening behind the scenes. We distinguish between the position of protesting merchants and the actions of forces causing chaos. Trump must know that U.S. interference in this internal affair will lead to regional instability and harm U.S. interests."

He added, "The American people must know. Trump has initiated this adventurism. They should pay attention to the safety of their soldiers."

President Trump had previously warned on Monday (December 29th), after meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, about concerns that Iran was increasing its ballistic missile production and preparing for test launches, stating, "If confirmed, there will be consequences."

The United States has attacked three of Iran's nuclear facilities in the past. Additionally, President Trump has supported Israel attacking Iran if it continues to expand its nuclear program.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said in a statement on Tuesday that Iran's response to "any oppressive aggression" would be "harsh and regrettable."
