North Korea launched a ballistic missile into the East Sea on the morning of the 4th, marking its first show of force this year. The South Korean military immediately detected the launch and began analysis, while the government convened an emergency security situation review meeting chaired by the National Security Office to respond.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff stated, "North Korea launched one unidentified ballistic missile towards the East Sea." The missile is presumed to have been launched at a high angle, and the Japanese Ministry of Defense announced that the projectile fell outside Japan's exclusive economic zone (EEZ). No casualties or property damage have been reported so far.

Military authorities explained that detailed specifications such as the missile's model, range, and maximum altitude are "under precise analysis by South Korean and US intelligence authorities" and "difficult to disclose at this stage." South Korea, the United States, and Japan are sharing relevant information and strengthening their surveillance posture to prepare for further provocations.

Attention is also focused on the timing of North Korea's ballistic missile launch, given that it appears to be a pre-planned military action.

Military authorities generally explain that a ballistic missile launch requires a certain level of preparation, including the deployment of a mobile launcher, pre-launch checks, and the activation of a command system, making it difficult to execute spontaneously.

This launch coincided with President Lee Jae-myung's departure for a state visit to China. As state visit schedules are publicly announced in advance, there is speculation that North Korea may have been aware of this timing.

However, the government and military authorities are closely analyzing the situation without offering specific interpretations of the launch's intent.

The Presidential Office's National Security Office held an 'Emergency Security Situation Review Meeting' on the day regarding North Korea's missile launch. Relevant agencies, including the Ministry of National Defense and the Joint Chiefs of Staff, attended the meeting to analyze the provocation and review its impact on national security and the readiness posture.

The National Security Office stated that it had instructed relevant agencies on necessary measures based on the meeting's outcome. The National Security Office emphasized, "North Korea's ballistic missile launch is a provocative act that violates UN Security Council resolutions," and "North Korea must immediately cease such provocations."

The People Power Party criticized North Korea's missile launch as "a provocation aimed at tarnishing the South Korea-China summit diplomacy."

Choi Bo-yoon, the chief spokesperson for the People Power Party, stated in a commentary, "The missile launch, timed with President Lee's departure for his state visit to China, is a clear attempt to disrupt state diplomacy." He added, "North Korea must immediately halt its military provocations and return to the dialogue table for denuclearization and peace."

The military and the government are maintaining a readiness posture in cooperation with South Korea and the United States, without ruling out the possibility of further provocations from North Korea. Analysis results of the missile's specifications will be released later.
