2025 LoL World Championship Finals to be Held in Chengdu, China on November 9

(Seoul=Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Joo-hwan = Riot Games announced on the 25th that the League of Legends (LoL) esports international tournament, the World Championship (Worlds), will be held in Chengdu, China, starting October 14.

A total of 17 teams will participate in the 2025 World Championship. The Korean league LCK, which produced the Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) champion and runner-up this year, and the Chinese league LPL, which recorded the next highest performance, will each send 4 teams. The remaining three regional leagues will each send 3 teams.

The Play-In Stage, held on the opening day, October 14, will take place at the Smart Esports Center in Beijing, China.

In the Play-In Stage, the 4th seed teams from LCK and LPL will compete in a best-of-five series for one day to secure a spot in the next stage, the Swiss Stage. The losing team will be immediately eliminated.

The Swiss Stage, the round of 16, will be held at the same venue starting the following day until October 25. Teams with the same win-loss record will face each other, and the first team to achieve 3 wins will advance to the Tournament Stage.

While Swiss Stage matches are single-elimination, matches that determine advancement or elimination will be played as best-of-three series.

The 8 teams that advance from the Swiss Stage will compete in the Tournament Stage from October 28 to November 2 at the Mercedes-Benz Arena, a representative sports venue in Shanghai.

From the Tournament Stage onwards, matches will be played as best-of-five series, where a single loss results in elimination.

The quarterfinals and semifinals are expected to be intense battles, as they will be held in a single week without a break for the first time in World Championship history.

The highly anticipated finals to determine the champion will be held on November 9 at the Dong'anhu Sports Park Multipurpose Gymnasium in Chengdu.

Gen.G Esports was the first Korean team to secure a spot in Worlds, as they defeated T1 in the MSI finals on the 13th and subsequently confirmed their advancement to the domestic league playoffs.
