U.S. President Donald Trump claimed on the 18th (local time) that Denmark had long failed to drive out Russian threats from Greenland, but now it will happen.

Trump stated on Truth Social that night, "NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) has been telling Denmark for 20 years, 'You must drive out Russian threats from Greenland,' but unfortunately, Denmark has done nothing," adding, "Now is the time and it will be accomplished!!!"

This appears to be an attempt to justify the annexation of Greenland by stating that the United States will step in because Denmark has failed to prevent Russian threats in Danish-owned Greenland.

President Trump is pressuring Europe to support the U.S. annexation of Greenland, arguing that if the U.S. does not secure Greenland, China or Russia will.

On the 17th, he drew backlash across Europe with a strong move, announcing that he would impose tariffs of 10% starting next month and 25% starting June 1st on eight European countries that oppose the Trump administration's efforts to secure Greenland.

From the beginning of the new year, President Trump has been aggressively pushing a foreign policy based on the "logic of power," emphasizing his intention to acquire Greenland by any means, following the arrest and extradition of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro to the United States.
