Nvidia, a leading artificial intelligence (AI) chipmaker, has invested an additional $2 billion (approximately 2.9 trillion won) in data center operator CoreWeave.
Nvidia announced in a press release on the 26th (local time) that it will expand its complementary relationship to help CoreWeave accelerate the construction of over 5 GW (gigawatts) of AI factories (AI-specialized data centers) by 2030.
Nvidia explained that it acquired CoreWeave's common stock (Class A shares) for $2 billion at $87.2 per share.
Nvidia stated, "CoreWeave is a platform built on Nvidia's infrastructure. This investment reflects Nvidia's confidence in CoreWeave's business, team, and growth strategy."
Nvidia has decided to provide financial support to CoreWeave to accelerate the procurement of land, power, and buildings in the process of building AI factories.
Furthermore, Nvidia will deploy multiple generations of Nvidia infrastructure across the CoreWeave platform for the early adoption of Nvidia's next-generation products, including the Rubin platform, its next-generation chip, the Vera central processing unit (CPU), and the BlueField storage system.
This marks the first time Nvidia is offering a CPU as a standalone product, which Bloomberg explained means Nvidia will be challenging CPU manufacturers Intel and AMD in the data center business.
CoreWeave operates large-scale data centers equipped with Nvidia chips in the United States and Europe, leasing them out or selling cloud computing capacity.
CoreWeave had previously signed a cloud computing capacity order contract worth $6.3 billion (9 trillion won) with CoreWeave in September last year.
Meanwhile, on the 26th, following the news of Nvidia's additional investment, CoreWeave's stock price surged by nearly 10% in pre-market trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
