Artist Lee Min-ju’s 63rd solo exhibition will be held from January 30th to February 13th (closed on Mondays) at Gallery Naeil in Gwanghwamun, Seoul.
True to her reputation as an artist who has frequently depicted horses to welcome the Year of the Horse, this exhibition features various subjects alongside images of horses in states of meditation and contemplation.
The exhibition, titled "The Resonance of the Void 4 - The Resonance of Myths Drawn from Spaces of Alienation," metaphorically expresses how the inner lives of modern people resonate with one another to sustain the thread of life.
The artist captures thoughts she has gathered throughout her long life's journey in her unique "Resonant Lines."
The circles within her work represent the void, the universe, and the moon. They may also symbolize emptiness, or reflect the artist’s daily life of constant reflection and repentance.
Through her fresco works, the artist embeds the profound meaning of lime—which has remained buried underground for 21 years—into her pieces. She expresses her philosophy through various techniques, including ink paintings on Hanji (traditional Korean paper) utilizing the texture of the canvas, as well as works combining ink, gouache, and acrylic on canvas.
Dr. Seo Gil-heon, a scholar of plastic arts, commented, "For painter Lee Min-ju, the canvas is a space of alienation and an ever-expanding cosmic space. Her imagery, typically rendered with brushstrokes like 'pima-jun' (hemp-fiber texture strokes), is surrounded by a wavelength of resonance as if all things emanate from a single light. This gives even the transcendent objects within her work the feeling of looking into a transparent void."
