The U.S. Central Command announced on Wednesday (local time) that a U.S. Navy fighter jet shot down an Iranian drone that was approaching the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln in the Arabian Sea. This incident poses a threat that could escalate tensions as the Trump administration warns of potential military action to bring Iran to the negotiating table.

In a statement, Colonel Tim Hawkins, a spokesman for CENTCOM, explained that the drone "aggressively approached" the aircraft carrier with "unclear intent" and continued to fly towards the ship despite de-escalation measures taken by U.S. forces operating in international waters.

According to the U.S. military, the shooting occurred just hours after Iranian forces harassed a U.S.-flagged merchant vessel with a U.S. crew aboard while it was navigating the Strait of Hormuz.

The Shahed-139 drone was shot down by an F-35C fighter jet launched from the Lincoln. According to spokesman Hawkins, the aircraft carrier was sailing about 500 miles (800 kilometers) off the southern coast of Iran. A U.S. military statement said there were no U.S. casualties or equipment losses.

A few hours later, military officials reported that Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) threatened the U.S.-flagged tanker Stena Imperative.

According to Hawkins' statement, an Iranian Mohajer drone and two boats "approached at high speed and threatened to board and seize the tanker."

The statement said the destroyer USS McFaul responded to the scene and escorted the Stena Imperative with "defensive air support from the U.S. Air Force," adding that the tanker was now sailing safely.

The actions come amid escalating tensions between the long-standing adversaries. Tensions between the two countries began to rise again after the Iranian government suppressed protests over economic instability that began in late December, expanding into challenges to the Islamic Republic.

President Donald Trump pledged in early January to "rescue" the Iranian people from the Iranian government's violent crackdown on protesters, which later turned into a campaign to pressure Tehran into reaching an agreement on its nuclear program and missile range limitations.

President Trump had previously stated in June that the U.S. airstrikes had "completely destroyed" Iran's nuclear facilities.

President Trump told reporters at the White House on Monday, "I hope the negotiations will be resolved. We are currently in talks with Iran, and it would be great if we could find common ground. If not, something bad might happen."

There have been reports that a meeting between the Iranian Foreign Minister and the U.S. envoy is scheduled to take place in Turkey on Friday (6th), but it is unclear whether it has been confirmed. This is one of the first clear signs that Tehran is attempting to negotiate with Washington, despite the breakdown of talks last summer.

The drone shootdown occurred just hours after the Iranian president announced on Tuesday that he had instructed his foreign minister to pursue "fair and equal negotiations" with the United States.
