Chosun Ilbo reported on the 27th (Korean time) that Fred Fleitz, Deputy Director of the "Center for American Security" under the America First Policy Institute (AFPI), known as an associate of President Donald Trump, stated during a meeting with members of the Korea-U.S. Parliamentary Association on Monday the 21st, that "If former President Yoon Suk-yeol is treated unfairly, we will not stand idly by."
AFPI is a think tank founded in 2021 by nine former State Department officials from the first Trump administration and about 50 former high-ranking White House officials. President Trump's current policy agenda, "Agenda 47," was developed here. Fleitz served as Chief of Staff for the National Security Council (NSC) during the first Trump administration.
Fleitz met with 13 members of the National Assembly of South Korea at the AFPI office in Washington D.C. and mentioned that President Trump had a similar experience. He said, "Just because the administration has changed, if there is any unfairness in the investigation process of a former president, or if there are actions that infringe upon the human rights of former President Yoon Suk-yeol, it could be detrimental to South Korea," according to Chosun Ilbo.
In fact, in a post uploaded to Facebook by Rep. Na Kyung-won on the 25th, she recalled, "In particular, mentioning the fairness of the investigation process for a former president from a human rights perspective seemed like an unusual message to the ruling party and the government."
Fleitz's remarks on this day are not entirely surprising. According to The Public, he stated at the Sejong National Strategy Forum held at the Korea Press Center on April 3rd, "President Trump has said he truly respects President Yoon." He added, "I don't want to interfere in South Korea's internal affairs," but also said, "If he hadn't been impeached, I would have wanted to talk to him. Trump himself said that."
Furthermore, in an exclusive interview with Channel A on January 20th, Fleitz suggested that the reason President Trump was not speaking out for former President Yoon was due to "concerns that the left-wing could use Trump's remarks against him." In the interview, he stated, "I don't think President Trump will make statements that would be favorable to the radical left who are trying to oust President Yoon and weaken presidential power."
As Fleitz's strong remarks continued, some lawmakers reportedly protested vehemently, retorting that "these are events that did not occur due to mistakes made by former President Yoon," according to Chosun Ilbo. Finance Today specifically reported Park Sang-hyuk, the senior spokesperson for the Democratic Party of Korea, as one of the individuals who protested to Fleitz.
In the same post, Rep. Na stated that the delegation of lawmakers visiting the U.S. had broad communication with key figures in American political circles and wrote, "There were two main messages conveyed by the U.S. side. First, bring concrete bargaining chips that can be offered to the U.S. Second, definitively participate in containing China."
She concluded by saying, "It was very regrettable that the remaining negotiation process is not easy and that there is not deep trust between the new administration and the United States."
President Trump recently demanded that Brazil's Lula administration withdraw the political prosecution of former President Bolsonaro and imposed a 50% tariff on Brazil.
Fleitz was one of the Trump administration officials who visited South Korea during the period when former President Yoon declared martial law and was impeached. At that time, Matt Schlapp, Chairman of CPAC, and Eugene Craig, a former Republican candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives, were also known to have met with former President Yoon.
Those who met former President Yoon, those who visited South Korea as international election observers, and associates of Trump, including Gordon Chang and Steve Bannon, have all consistently labeled the early presidential election on June 3rd as fraudulent and have called for the United States to intervene to protect South Korea's liberal democratic order.
