The Pentagon is preparing to deploy a second U.S. Navy aircraft carrier strike group to the Middle East as President Donald Trump warned that nuclear negotiations with Iran must succeed.

President Trump made it clear that military options remain on the table.

The Wall Street Journal recently reported that Pentagon officials are already formulating plans to dispatch another aircraft carrier to join the USS Abraham Lincoln strike group already operating in the region.

The move is expected to significantly augment U.S. naval firepower amid escalating tensions.

President Trump stated earlier this week that he would not hesitate to reinforce U.S. forces if negotiations with Tehran break down.

"We will not let Iran have a nuclear weapon," President Trump told reporters, adding that while negotiations are underway, "if we cannot reach an agreement, we will do it another way."

President Trump emphasized that while he prefers a diplomatic solution, pressure is also part of the strategy.

"They understand that too," he said, referring to the Iranian leadership, "we want peace, but it must be real peace."

The Wall Street Journal reported that the George H.W. Bush is preparing for deployment, awaiting the president's final orders.

The Abraham Lincoln strike group, after operations in the Indo-Pacific, has already been redeployed to waters near the Arabian Sea, restoring a continuous U.S. aircraft carrier presence across the Middle East.

An aircraft carrier strike group is centered on a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, which serves as a mobile airbase capable of sustaining continuous combat operations.

Aircraft carriers typically carry between 60 and 75 aircraft, including F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jets, EA-18G Growler electronic warfare aircraft, E-2D Hawkeye airborne early warning aircraft, and MH-60 Seahawk helicopters.

The strike group also includes guided-missile cruisers and destroyers equipped with the Aegis combat system for air and ballistic missile defense, often supported by attack submarines providing undersea warfare capabilities.

The formation provides long-range strike capabilities, missile defense, maritime security operations, and rapid response capabilities during crises.

Indirect talks between Washington and Tehran resumed on Feb. 6 in Muscat, Oman, marking the first sustained diplomatic contact since clashes between Iran-backed militias and U.S. forces last year.

U.S. officials have stated that any agreement must permanently block Iran's path to acquiring nuclear weapons and include a robust inspection and verification regime.

"Iran should never possess nuclear weapons," stressed Secretary of State Marco Rubio, adding that enforcement and transparency are non-negotiable elements in any negotiation.

The Trump administration has also called for broader discussions that address Iran's ballistic missile program and its support for proxy forces across the Middle East.

The Iranian leadership has pushed back against expanded negotiations, claiming its nuclear program is peaceful and rejecting what it deems irrelevant demands.

Iran continues to produce highly enriched uranium, with Western officials warning that this enrichment level is approaching weapons-grade thresholds, dramatically shortening Tehran's breakout time to a nuclear weapon.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated this week that Iran "does not pursue nuclear weapons" and expressed willingness to provide assurances regarding its nuclear activities, but has not signaled a halt to enrichment.

President Trump met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Wednesday, with Iran being a primary topic of discussion.

Following the meeting, President Trump stated, "we have to insist that negotiations continue and that we can come to an agreement," but reiterated that "we will not allow Iran to have nuclear weapons."

Netanyahu stated that Israel's position is that any agreement must address not only uranium enrichment but also Iran's missile capabilities and its support for armed groups in the region.

Israeli officials have repeatedly warned that if nuclear negotiations are confined solely to the nuclear issue, the broader security threats will remain.

While the Pentagon has not announced a final deployment decision, officials have signaled that preparing carrier strike groups ensures the U.S. can act swiftly once ordered, Newsmax reported.
