U.S. Vice President JD Vance on the 20th (local time) called the Supreme Court's ruling that President Donald Trump's imposition of reciprocal tariffs based on the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) was illegal, "manifest lawlessness."
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Vice President Vance stated, "Today, the Supreme Court decided that even though Congress granted the president the authority to 'regulate imports,' it doesn't actually mean that."
Vice President Vance criticized the Supreme Court's ruling, saying, "The only effect is to make it more difficult for the president to protect American industries and supply chain resilience."
He emphasized, "President Trump possesses other broad tariff authorities, and he will use them to protect American workers and advance the trade priorities of this administration."
Immediately after the Supreme Court's ruling on the same day, President Trump held a press conference at the White House and announced an alternative to the reciprocal tariffs based on the IEEPA, which was deemed illegal. He stated that he would impose new tariffs, with a 10% global tariff under Section 122 of the Trade Act to take effect within three days, and parallel country-specific tariff investigations under Section 301 of the same act.
