The White House [Yonhap News]
An official at the White House stated on the 24th (local time) that the U.S. Donald Trump administration is undertaking practical work to increase a new global tariff, which replaces the "reciprocal tariffs" invalidated by a Supreme Court ruling, from the current 10% to 15%.
According to Reuters, the official said there has been no change in President Trump's directive to raise global tariffs to 15%. However, Reuters reported that the official did not provide specific details, such as when the increase to 15% would take effect.
As stipulated in the proclamation signed and announced by President Trump on the 20th, a new 10% tariff began to be applied to U.S.-bound exports from around the world, excluding "exempt items," effective at 00:01 Eastern Time (2:01 PM Korean Time on the 24th).
The day after announcing the 10% global tariff proclamation, on the 21st, President Trump announced via social media that the rate would be increased to 15%, but did not disclose when the increase would take effect.
Therefore, the newly introduced global tariff rate will initially be applied at 10% and is expected to rise to 15% soon through procedures such as the announcement of a new proclamation.
Earlier, on the 20th, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the President did not have the authority to impose and collect reciprocal tariffs (tariffs with differentiated rates by country) under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), nor the "fentanyl tariffs" (tariffs imposed on China, Mexico, and Canada for insufficient cooperation in blocking the influx of the drug fentanyl into the U.S.), thereby invalidating the reciprocal tariffs and fentanyl tariffs.
