American and World Politics in the Trump Era / By Lee Choon-geun, Book&People, 25,000 won

Amid widespread criticism of Donald Trump from mainstream media in both the United States and South Korea, 'America and World Politics in the Trump Era' has been published, offering an accurate analysis of the impact of U.S. President Donald Trump on the world.
The author, Lee Chun-geun, CEO of the International Politics Academy, is an international politics expert who has previously served as Head of the Foreign Affairs and Security Studies Department at the Sejong Institute, Head of the Foreign Affairs and Security Studies Department at the Korea Economic Research Institute, and an Adjunct Professor at Ewha Womans University School of Business. He is the author of 'The North Korean Nuclear Problem,' 'Realist International Politics,' 'US-China Hegemonic Competition and South Korea's Strategic Choices,' and 'War and International Politics.'
Approximately one year into President Trump's second term, the world has changed so significantly that it can be divided into the pre-Trump and post-Trump eras.
The author states, "Trump is working diligently with the goal of creating America's golden age, and as a result, he is proud of the fact that America has truly returned (America is so Back)."
The phrase "America has returned" implies that America, which enjoyed a golden age in the past, had lost its status in recent decades, and Trump is confidently declaring that America's golden age has begun anew through his efforts.
The author argues that while Trump's policies are surprising, they are not entirely new in American history.
For example, the remarkable operation on January 3rd where U.S. special forces captured Venezuelan President Maduro is a repetition of America's traditional foreign policy over the past 100 years, not an act initiated by Trump as the first U.S. president to do so.
"On the day Maduro was captured, President Trump stated that the United States would take possession of Greenland, but this was not the first time Trump had said or done such a thing. As early as 1946, President Truman demanded that the Danish government hand over Greenland to the U.S. in exchange for $100 million in gold."
According to the author, although the U.S. did not acquire Greenland at that time, it had effectively controlled Greenland's territory since 1940.
When German forces occupied Denmark in 1940, members of the Danish government-in-exile appealed to the U.S. to protect Greenland, and the U.S. military entered Greenland. U.S. military bases in Greenland made significant contributions to the Allied victory in World War II.
Since then, all successive U.S. presidents have considered Greenland vitally important to U.S. national security and ultimately wished to make it U.S. territory. However, no one could openly say so.
"Trump is clearly different from any previous U.S. president in that he can bravely articulate strategic truths that others dare not speak. Trump is a president who can say what others want to say but cannot, and that is why Trump can change America and the world."
Following the U.S. defeat of the Soviet Union and its emergence as the sole superpower, world politics entered the era of Pax Americana. The author has been keenly researching the nature of American power and grand strategy during the Pax Americana era.
Around the fall of 2020, as the first Trump term concluded, the author was planning to complete 'Immortal Great Nation America: The Essence of U.S. Power and Grand Strategy (tentative title)' and publish it immediately upon the start of Trump's second term.
However, the author's plan was indefinitely postponed by Biden's victory in the 2020 presidential election.
The author doubted whether Biden would be a leader capable of sustaining the era of Pax Americana and was skeptical about the appropriateness of publishing a book based on the assumption of America's overwhelming hegemony.
Meanwhile, in the 2024 U.S. presidential election, the author became convinced of Trump's re-election and began to reorganize the manuscript he had put aside. This led to the creation of the current book.
The author notes that it is difficult to gauge how many more transformations in American and world politics will occur by the time this book is published, stating that Trump has already achieved the outcome of bombing Iran and assassinating Khamenei during this period.
The author predicts, "By January 2029, when President Trump's term ends, the world will be markedly different. At that time, America will have achieved the complete hegemony that Trump desired, and the U.S. will also be significantly more conservative than it is now."
This is a message that South Korea, which is becoming increasingly left-leaning day by day, should heed.
