The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) announced it has strengthened its alliance-wide ballistic missile defense posture.

NATO spokesperson Martin O'Donnell shared a statement containing these details on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on the 5th (local time), explaining that this measure was taken after NATO intercepted a missile fired towards Turkey the previous day.

O'Donnell added that the enhanced missile defense posture will be maintained at a high level "until the indiscriminate and continuous retaliatory attacks by Iran across the Middle East subside."

He also emphasized that NATO "perfectly executed" missile defense in Turkey the previous day, stating, "In less than 10 minutes, NATO personnel identified the ballistic missile posing a threat to the Alliance, confirmed its trajectory, issued an alert to ground and sea-based missile defense systems, and neutralized the threat by launching an interceptor missile, thereby protecting our territory and people."

Concerns were raised that the downing of an Iranian ballistic missile heading towards Turkish airspace, a NATO member, by NATO's air defense system might lead to the Middle East conflict spilling over to NATO member states.

However, the Iranian military, in response, claimed that it respects the sovereignty of its friendly nation, Turkey, and asserted, "We have never fired any missile towards Turkish territory."

Meanwhile, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte told Reuters in an interview on the same day that the interception of an Iranian ballistic missile heading towards Turkey by NATO's air defense system the previous day was not an immediate cause for invoking Article 5 of the NATO Treaty on collective defense.

This statement is interpreted as a reconfirmation that NATO will not intervene in the current Middle East situation.
