In the 2026 World Baseball Classic (WBC) quarterfinal match against the Dominican Republic, a regrettable umpire's call was made during the bottom of the 4th inning's offensive play, when the South Korean national baseball team was trailing and looking for an opportunity to catch up.

The South Korean national baseball team is currently trailing 0-7 against the Dominican Republic in the quarterfinals tournament held at LoanDepot Park in Miami, Florida, USA, as of the 6th inning on the 14th (Korean time).

After conceding 3 runs in the 2nd inning and 4 runs in the 3rd inning, the South Korean team had a chance in the top of the 4th inning when lead batter Jermaine Jones hit a single to right field, marking the team's first hit.

However, a regrettable call was made during the process of the next batter, Lee Jung-hoo's ground ball to the pitcher, which resulted in a double play.

The incorrect call occurred when the shortstop, after receiving the ball from the pitcher, stepped on second base directly and then threw to first base.

A review of the instant replay showed that Lee Jung-hoo reached first base before the shortstop's throw, but the umpire ruled that the throw was faster.

The South Korean team was unable to request another review because they had already used their video replay challenge in the bottom of the 3rd inning's defense.

This is because while each team is allowed two video replay challenges per game from the semifinals onwards in this WBC, only one challenge is permitted up to the quarterfinals.

In the bottom of the 3rd inning's defense, the South Korean team used their video replay opportunity after lead batter Juan Soto reached base on a single to center field, and then scored on a double by Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

The South Korean team argued that catcher Park Dong-won's tag was made before Soto's right arm touched home plate, but the review confirmed that Park Dong-won did not make a proper tag.

The regret of our national team was further amplified when Ahn Hyun-min hit a double to right-center field for a base hit in the top of the 4th inning with two outs, following the first base umpire's incorrect call.
