Britain stated on the 15th (local time) that it is reviewing all options after receiving a request from U.S. President Donald Trump to send warships to the Strait of Hormuz.
Ed Miliband, the Secretary of State for Energy Security, told BBC: "Safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz is important. There are various ways we can contribute, including mine-detection drones."
However, he refused to provide detailed explanations of the options the government is considering.
In a post on Truth Social the previous day, President Trump wrote that he hopes China, France, Japan, South Korea, Britain, and other countries will send warships to the region.
When asked if Britain is considering deploying drones or ships, Minister Miliband replied: "You can assume that we are considering all options with our allies that can help reopen the strait."
Minister Miliband added, "The best and most certain way to reopen the strait is to end the war."
A Ministry of Defence spokesperson also responded to an inquiry from The Times newspaper regarding President Trump's remarks by stating, "We are currently discussing various options with our allies and partners to ensure the safety of transportation in the region."
Previously, The Times reported that Britain was considering deploying thousands of mine-detection drones and interceptor drones to the Strait of Hormuz.
According to The Times, the British military leadership is discussing options for deploying additional assets to the Gulf region should a decision be made. Currently, the Type 45 destroyer HMS Dragon has been dispatched to reinforce the defense of a British military base in Cyprus.
The British political sphere is also engaged in debate over President Trump's remarks.
Claire Curtis-Newington, the shadow energy security secretary for the main opposition Conservative Party, told the BBC that Britain should consider sending warships or drones to the Middle East if it is in the national interest. She also claimed that a Conservative government would have allowed the U.S. to use British military bases more quickly than a Labour government.
However, Ed Davey, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, the second-largest opposition party, argued that Britain should focus on de-escalating the conflict and should not send warships to the Strait of Hormuz. He emphasized that the U.S.'s war with Iran is "reckless and illegal" and that Britain should not be swayed by its demands.
