  • Trump requests allies to defend strait… Korea says "Domestic political consultation is important"
  • Government Message at the Forefront of 20% of World Oil Passage: 'Politics Over Economy'

  • Drawing the line on combat troop deployment... between alliance burden and domestic politics

The Blue House stated a cautious stance, saying, "Dispatching troops to Hormuz is a matter that requires sufficient discussion," but some in diplomatic circles interpret this message as a potential signal to effectively draw a line against deployment.South Korea's government response is drawing attention as U.S. President Donald Trump has requested major allies, including South Korea, to send warships to ensure the safety of the Strait of Hormuz.

The Blue House stated a cautious stance, saying, "It is a matter that requires sufficient discussion," but some in diplomatic circles interpret this message as a potential signal to effectively draw a line against deployment.

In a broadcast interview on the 17th, Hong Ik-pyo, Senior Secretary to the President for Political Affairs, stated regarding the request for warships in the Strait of Hormuz, "The dispatch of combat troops requires considerable deliberation," adding, "Not only the South Korea-U.S. relationship but also the domestic political consultation process is very important."

He also mentioned South Korea's past military contributions, such as the Vietnam War, saying, "We do not believe that South Korea has received unilateral favors from the United States." He also emphasized that major countries like the UK, France, and Japan also have a negative sentiment towards troop deployment.

Some in diplomatic circles analyze that these remarks may be a polite refusal message, showing a negative stance towards immediate warship deployment while minimizing the burden on the alliance.

This is because in diplomatic language, expressions such as "requires considerable deliberation" or "domestic political consultation is important" are often used as euphemisms to suggest a lack of immediate willingness to participate.

In particular, the fact that Secretary Hong emphasized the phrase "dispatch of combat troops" is also noteworthy. This can be interpreted as drawing a line against combat deployment, unlike maritime escort or non-combat support.

The reason this controversy is gaining attention is that the Strait of Hormuz is not just a simple military conflict zone but a crucial passage for the global energy market.

Approximately 20 million barrels of crude oil pass through this strait daily, which accounts for about 20% of global oil consumption. Based on maritime transport, about 30% of the world's oil transport volume passes through this strait.

Natural gas is no exception. Approximately 20% of the world's LNG supply moves through this strait.

South Korea is a major energy importer. It relies on the Middle East for more than 60% of its crude oil imports, a significant portion of which passes through the Strait of Hormuz.

Therefore, the safety of the strait is considered not just a military issue but an energy security issue directly linked to the South Korean economy.

If the safety of the strait is compromised, it could lead to an increase in international oil prices and logistics costs, potentially affecting exchange rates and financial markets.

Despite this, some argue that the government's message is more focused on political variables than economic or energy issues.

The emphasis on "domestic political consultation process" in Secretary Hong's remarks shows that the issue of troop deployment is closely linked to domestic political variables, not just diplomatic judgment.

This situation is assessed as a problem where energy security, alliance relations, and domestic politics clash simultaneously.

There is also an analysis that President Trump's strategic calculations are at play. The United States has been calling for stability in Middle East maritime routes and an expanded security contribution from its allies.

Some experts believe that this request may be a strategic signal to readjust the division of roles among allies, rather than a simple demand for military cooperation.

Ultimately, the South Korean government faces a situation where it must make a choice among three variables: energy security, alliance relations, and domestic politics.

However, this controversy leaves one question.

What criteria will South Korea use to judge its national strategy in the face of a crisis unfolding in a vital global energy passage?

The Strait of Hormuz is not a distant sea.

Instability there will eventually return as waves impacting the South Korean economy.
