President Donald Trump has continued to express his dissatisfaction with the lukewarm support from allies for U.S. military intervention in Iran and their passive stance on securing the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial chokepoint in the Persian Gulf through which approximately 20% of global oil trade passes.
On Wednesday, Trump warned on Truth Social that after the U.S. completely eliminates the Iranian regime through "Operation Epic Fury," nations that rely on the strait as a source of oil supply should ensure its security.
Trump wrote, "I wonder what would happen if we completely eliminated the remnants of the Iranian terrorist state and then let the countries that use it as a source of oil be responsible for securing the so-called 'Strait.' Then our uncooperative 'allies' would move quickly!!!"
President Trump expressed his fury on Tuesday, stating that the U.S. has not received support from NATO "despite helping them so much," and argued that preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons is in the allies' interest.
He complained that NATO allies, while relying on billions of dollars in U.S. aid to counter Russia's invasion of Ukraine, have offered no assistance to U.S. and Israeli efforts to dismantle the Iranian regime, which has been a threat to the Middle East and beyond for decades.
The U.S. and Israel launched joint military operations targeting Iran's political leadership and military infrastructure on February 28.
Iran retaliated by attacking oil-producing Gulf nations hosting U.S. military facilities and severely restricting passage through the strait. Tehran stated that while the strait remains open, it is "effectively closed to our enemies."
Maritime traffic has significantly decreased as major shipping companies have suspended their routes.
Oil prices have exceeded $100 per barrel since the conflict began, and U.S. consumers are paying an average of $3.84 per gallon for regular gasoline. According to AAA, this is a 31% increase from $2.92 per gallon on February 19.
While the U.S. does not rely as heavily on the strait for its oil imports compared to other regions, oil is a global commodity, and its price is determined worldwide.
Significant supply disruptions, such as reduced traffic through the strait, exacerbate the overall supply and demand balance, driving up prices globally, including in the U.S.
In another post on Truth Social on Wednesday, Trump stated that he was doing the world a favor.
He wrote, "To all the 'suckers' in the world, Iran is the No. 1 state sponsor of terror, which everyone knows. We are rapidly destroying them!"
