Members of the People Power Party, including Leader Jang Dong-hyuk and Floor Leader Song Eon-seok, are chanting slogans at the National Assembly's Rotunda Hall on the 22nd, denouncing the proposed parliamentary inquiry by the Democratic Party of Korea into alleged fabricated indictments by the prosecution during the Yoon Suk-yeol administration. [Yonhap News]
The People Power Party (PPP) announced on the 22nd that it will file a constitutional complaint with the Constitutional Court regarding the plan for a parliamentary inquiry into alleged fabricated indictments by the prosecution during the Yoon Suk-yeol administration, which passed the National Assembly plenary session.
Yoo Sang-bum, deputy floor leader, told reporters shortly after the plenary session that "Article 8 of the Act on Parliamentary Audit and Inspection stipulates that it shall not be exercised for the purpose of intervening in ongoing trials or prosecutions of cases under investigation." He added, "As this clearly violates the provision, we plan to take necessary measures, including filing a constitutional complaint."
Another key official from the party's leadership stated, "Regarding the possibility of conducting a parliamentary inquiry into matters currently under trial, I believe there has been a constitutional court ruling." He added, "We will file the constitutional complaint by tomorrow."
The PPP maintains that this parliamentary inquiry is "a clear violation of the constitution and law, intended to justify the withdrawal of the indictment against President Lee Jae-myung," but plans to participate in the Special Committee for the Parliamentary Inquiry separately. The party submitted the list of committee members to the Speaker's office on the 19th.
Song Eon-seok, the floor leader, said in his remarks at the party's general meeting today, "We plan to participate in the Special Committee for the Parliamentary Inquiry. There is a saying, 'To catch a tiger, you must enter its den.' We will not shy away."
Song emphasized, "I will enter the Special Committee for the Parliamentary Inquiry and fight to inform the public that the claim for the withdrawal of charges related to President Lee's criminal acts is preposterous."
The PPP held a rally at the Rotunda Hall to protest the approval of the parliamentary inquiry plan, refraining from participating in the vote held during the plenary session.
Members held placards with slogans such as "Stop the Dictatorial Politics of Parliamentary Inquiries to Erase Crimes" and chanted slogans like "Let's uncover the dark deal of indictment withdrawal through parliamentary inquiry" and "Self-absolution, crime erasure—the people will judge."
Na Kyung-won, a five-term veteran lawmaker, stated in her protest speech, "The Democratic Party intends to make this National Assembly their private property. They should just dissolve the National Assembly. We cannot be mere figureheads in your dictatorship." She warned, "If the Democratic Party insists on withdrawing the indictment, remember that it will be the end of the Lee Jae-myung administration."
Bae Jun-young, a lawmaker, raised his voice, saying, "The Democratic Party is using the parliamentary inquiry as a hunting dog for the administration and as an eraser to wipe away (President Lee's) crimes." He added, "What our party can do in this absurd parliamentary inquiry is to meticulously lay out the truth before the public again."
Meanwhile, Song Eon-seok criticized the passage of the "Judicial Three Laws" and the establishment of the Public Prosecutor's Office and the Major Crimes Investigation Agency (MCIA) bills the previous day, calling them "evil laws that blow up the prosecution and dismantle its crime investigation function."
He remarked, "Most law-abiding citizens rarely go near courts or prosecutor's offices in their lives, so they might perceive this as having no impact on their livelihoods." However, he warned, "A South Korea where the judicial and prosecution systems do not function properly is bound to go to extremely dangerous territory."
He added, "We must fight until a world comes where ordinary people who obey the law are respected, and bad people who commit crimes are punished accordingly." He concluded, "We must definitely discuss what methods this will involve during the upcoming (June 3rd) election process."
