Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi [TASS United News]
The foreign ministers of China and Russia exchanged views on the Iran war situation and repeatedly urged the warring parties to cease fire.
According to China's Xinhua News Agency on the 5th, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held a phone conversation that day. China used the expression "ying yue" (應約, responding to a request), indicating the call was made at Russia's request.
Minister Wang stated, "As permanent members of the UN Security Council, China and Russia should uphold justice in major matters of right and wrong, adopt an objective and balanced approach, and gain more understanding and support from the international community. China has consistently advocated for the political resolution of international and regional issues through dialogue and negotiation."
He added, "The current Middle East situation continues to deteriorate, and the war is intensifying. The fundamental solution to the Strait of Hormuz passage issue is a swift ceasefire and an end to the war. China is willing to continue cooperating with Russia in the UN Security Council, communicate in a timely manner on significant issues, and strive for the de-escalation of the situation, regional peace and stability, and common global security."
Minister Lavrov stated that day, "Russia is highly concerned about the continuous escalation of the Middle East situation. Regarding the current war and the Strait of Hormuz issue, Russia insists that military action must be immediately halted and that parties must return to the political and diplomatic track to resolve the root causes of the conflict," Xinhua News Agency reported.
The agency further explained that Minister Lavrov also said, "The UN Security Council should play a constructive role in this regard. Russia is willing to continue to voice its opinions and exert its efforts in close communication and coordination with China to promote a ceasefire and an end to the war."
Since the outbreak of the Iran war, China has positioned itself as a mediator and actively communicated with Middle Eastern and European countries. While criticizing the "illegal military actions" of the United States and Israel, China has also raised concerns about Iran's attacks on Gulf states and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing its "neutral" stance externally.
