Opposition rally [AFP=Yonhap News]
Venezuela's opposition party, founded by Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado, is demanding that snap presidential elections be held within a month, local media outlet El Nacional and AFP reported on the 10th (local time).
In a statement released today, the opposition party, Vente Venezuela, asserted that "presidential elections must be held within 30 days" according to the constitution, as acting President Nicolás Maduro has been absent for over 90 days.
Under Venezuelan law, the Vice President can act as president for a maximum of 90 days during the president's temporary absence, with the possibility of a 90-day extension subject to the approval of the National Assembly.
The legal term for Delcy Rodríguez, who has been serving as acting president after being Vice President under the Maduro government, expired on the 3rd according to this provision, but she has not received parliamentary approval for any further extension.
The opposition criticized the Rodríguez government for maintaining power without parliamentary extension approval, calling it a clear violation of the constitution. They particularly criticized the Supreme Court for creating the term "coercive absence," which is not found in the constitution, to legitimize Rodríguez's continued hold on power.
Vente Venezuela emphasized, "Failing to pressure and demand adherence to the constitution for the president and the individual occupying that office would be allowing the dictatorship and repressive system we have fought for years to remain in Venezuela."
Currently, President Maduro is in New York, imprisoned and undergoing trial on charges of drug trafficking and terrorism, making his effective return impossible.
