Iran proposed to the United States to resume passage through the Strait of Hormuz and negotiate nuclear issues after an earlier agreement on a ceasefire, but U.S. President Donald Trump rejected it, Reuters reported on the 2nd (local time).

Reuters quoted an anonymous senior Iranian official as saying, "The war ends with guarantees that Israel and the United States will not attack (Iran) again. The proposal also includes Iran opening the Strait of Hormuz and the United States lifting the maritime blockade."

The official explained that in exchange for the lifting of U.S. sanctions on Iran after such a ceasefire agreement, Iran would hold talks to restrict its nuclear program, and that Iran demanded the U.S. recognize its right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes, even if it agreed to suspend uranium enrichment.

He also told Reuters that this proposal by the Iranian government to postpone nuclear negotiations to a later stage represents a significant change aimed at promoting a ceasefire agreement between the U.S. and Iran.

The official assessed, "Under this agreement, negotiations on more complex nuclear issues have been moved to the final stage to create a more favorable atmosphere for (the U.S.-Iran ceasefire negotiations)."

Regarding Iran's latest negotiation proposal, President Trump rejected it the previous day, stating without revealing specific details, "I am not satisfied. They are demanding things I cannot agree to."

The United States' stance is that it does not recognize Iran's uranium enrichment activities to prevent it from acquiring nuclear weapons, which creates a significant gap with the Iranian proposal reported by Reuters. The U.S. also prefers a comprehensive agreement that includes nuclear and missile programs rather than a phased agreement with Iran.

On the 27th of last month, the U.S. media Axios reported that Iran had conveyed a proposal through Pakistan to the U.S. suggesting opening the Strait of Hormuz first, declaring a ceasefire, and then continuing nuclear negotiations.

Following this report, White House spokesperson Caroline Levitt drew a line, stating at a briefing, "The President's red lines concerning Iran are very clear."
