To visit China on the 14th~15th... It seems we'll have to wait until the last minute to see if there will be a 'lightning summit'.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met with U.S. President Donald Trump in June 2019 [Yonhap News file photo]
The White House stated on the 4th (local time) that there are currently no plans for North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump during the latter's visit to China in mid-month.
A White House official responded to Yonhap News' inquiry on the same day by saying, "Such a meeting is not currently on the schedule."
President Trump's visit to China is scheduled for two days, the 14th and 15th of this month.
During this period, President Trump is scheduled to hold a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
However, as the White House official mentioned the word "currently" when stating that a meeting between President Trump and Chairman Kim is not included in the official schedule, the possibility of the two leaders having a dramatic meeting cannot be entirely ruled out depending on future coordination between the U.S. and North Korea.
Earlier, on the 13th of last month, Prime Minister Kim Sung-han, during his visit to the United States, had a "surprise meeting" with President Trump at the White House for about 20 minutes. Afterward, at a meeting with Korean correspondents, he relayed that President Trump had said, "It would be good to meet (Chairman Kim). But it might be during this trip to China, or it might not be, or it could be later."
