The U.S. Department of Defense announced on the 5th (local time) that it has promoted Major General David G. Shoemaker to Lieutenant General and nominated him as the Deputy Commander of the U.S. Forces Korea.


In a press release on the same day, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegses stated that President Donald Trump had nominated key general officers for command positions.


The nominee, Shoemaker, will concurrently serve as the Commander of the 7th Air Force at Osan Air Base, as well as the Air Component Commander of the Combined Forces Command and the United Nations Command.


The U.S. Department of Defense explained that he is currently serving as the Deputy Commander of the 9th Air Force (Air Forces Central) of the U.S. Central Command and the Deputy Commander of the Combined Air Component Command at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.


Nominations for general officer command positions in major U.S. commands are subject to confirmation by Congress.


A graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1994, he is a veteran pilot with over 2,000 flight hours in T-37, T-38, and F-16A/B/C/D aircraft.


He has also served three tours at U.S. Air Force Base Kunsan in South Korea. His previous assignments include Standardization and Evaluation Chief for the 8th Operations Group (2005-2006), Director of Operations for the 35th Fighter Squadron (2010-2011), and Commander of the 8th Fighter Wing (2017-2018).
