Party Leader Hwang Kyo-ahn: "I will risk my life to block the constitutional amendment" ... Begins "Indefinite Hunger Strike"

"They are trying to change the national identity without national consensus," he sharply criticized.

"I will not even take a sip of water" ... A decisive move with a "waterless hunger strike."

Hwang Kyo-ahn, leader of the Liberty and Innovation Party, has entered an "indefinite hunger strike" to block the hasty constitutional amendment without national consensus, making a decisive move.

Party Leader Hwang, who previously served as Prime Minister, held an emergency press conference in Gwanghwamun, Seoul, at 5 PM on the 6th and strongly denounced the attempt to revise the constitution for political expediency, stating, "They are trying to change the national identity and fundamental order without national consensus."

"Hasty constitutional amendment without national consensus is an attempt to shake the foundations of the Republic of Korea."

At the press conference that day, Party Leader Hwang vehemently criticized, "A constitutional amendment is absolutely not possible now," and declared his strong will to block it by risking his life, saying, "This is an act of ruining the country, and the Republic of Korea is in a state of extreme emergency."

He emphasized, "The constitution does not belong to any particular regime or faction." He lamented, "They are hastily pushing forward with revising the constitution, which is based on the consensus of the people, without any national discussion, sufficient social consensus, or thorough review, to match the election schedule."

He then escalated his attack, stating, "The constitution is not something that can be pushed through. They are trying to insert a specific historical consciousness into the preamble of the constitution and to re-establish and redefine the nation's identity. Pushing such a significant issue without national consensus is not democracy."

Hwang Kyo-ahn, leader of the Liberty and Innovation Party, began an "indefinite hunger strike" to block the constitutional amendment from 5 PM on the 6th.

Urging a "fight to the death" from right-wing lawmakers... "If even one person defects, the constitutional order will collapse."

Party Leader Hwang strongly urged right-wing lawmakers to maintain "strong solidarity" ahead of the plenary session vote.

He warned, "Not a single vote can be lost. If even one person falters, the constitutional order of the Republic of Korea could collapse. This is not a time for quiet observation. The country has almost become a communist state. They are now trying to put the final nail in the coffin with the constitutional amendment."

He particularly criticized the move as a "cowardly and hasty push driven by political calculations" and requested the unity of the right-wing camp to block the constitutional amendment.

From 5 PM, a "Waterless Hunger Strike"... Hwang Kyo-ahn's Decisive Stance

Party Leader Hwang Kyo-ahn raised the intensity of his protest by declaring the start of his hunger strike.

He declared, "I could not just stand by and watch the beloved Republic of Korea crumble like this, so I made this decision. Starting today at 5 PM, I will not take even a sip of water to block the constitutional amendment. I will continue my hunger strike until the proposal for the constitutional amendment is withdrawn," showing his determination for an extreme struggle.

He then appealed to the public's attention by combining religious conviction and patriotism.

Party Leader Hwang pleaded, "I will earnestly pray to God while fasting. I will earnestly pray for the Republic of Korea, which is protected by God, to be surely preserved. I ask that the citizens also pray with me."

He continued, "The Republic of Korea is a free democratic republic. From being the poorest country in the world, we have established a free democratic nation and become a strong power envied by the world. Yet, there are those who seek to destroy this country. The constitutional amendment will be their final attempt," he pointed out.

"I will risk my life to block the constitutional amendment" ... Political circles are keenly watching Hwang's hunger strike's impact.

Party Leader Hwang stated, "It starts with plausible words, but once the door to constitutional amendment is opened, our Republic of Korea's system will quickly collapse. I will now begin my hunger strike with the intent to block this outrageous push by risking my life. Citizens, please join your will with mine."

The political sphere is in a mood of keen observation regarding the impact of Party Leader Hwang's hunger strike on preventing defections among conservative lawmakers ahead of the vote and on rallying his support base.

The vote on the constitutional amendment bill is scheduled to be held at the National Assembly plenary session on the 7th. If the amendment passes, a national referendum will be held concurrently with the local elections on June 3rd.
