About 500 civic groups with centrist and conservative leanings, including the Pan-Citizen Civil Society Organizations Federation and Freedom Solidarity, held a press conference at the National Assembly Communication Center on the morning of the 8th and urged the discontinuation of the so-called 'Fabricated Prosecution Special Prosecutor Act.' The Civic Society Joint Conference, comprised of centrist and conservative civic groups such as the Pan-Citizen Civil Society Organizations Federation and Freedom Solidarity, held a press conference at the National Assembly Communication Center on the 7th and urged the discontinuation of the so-called 'Fabricated Prosecution Special Prosecutor Act.'
They argued, "Attempting to abolish the criminal trial of a sitting president through legislation is an attempt to suffocate the rule of law and a declaration of war on the constitutional order itself."
They added, "A structure where a special prosecutor appointed by the defendant eliminates the defendant's trial is judicial destruction disguised as law. If this precedent becomes entrenched, South Korea will not be a state governed by the rule of law, but a country where the majority can destroy the law through popular vote," expressing their concern.
These organizations demanded that the Democratic Party of Korea withdraw the bill and urged the judiciary to proceed with the eight trials related to President Lee Jae-myung normally.
