The Japanese government is coordinating with the U.S. government to arrange an early phone call between Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and U.S. President Donald Trump following the U.S.-China summit that began on the 14th, the Mainichi Shimbun reported.

The newspaper stated, "The Japanese government is closely watching the direction of this summit," and that the goal is to "reaffirm Japan-U.S. relations (through the phone call)."

Japan is particularly attentive to the discussions between the two countries regarding the Taiwan issue at this summit.

Prime Minister Takaichi, who visited the United States and met with President Trump on March 19th, is understood to have arranged that visit to Washington with the intention of confirming the Japan-U.S. alliance and coordinating China policy with President Trump before his trip to China, following his remarks implying "intervention in case of a Taiwan contingency" which led to conflict with China.

However, President Trump's trip to China, which was originally mentioned for around the end of March, was postponed to this month. Furthermore, the suddenly emerging variable of the Iran war became a key issue, causing the summit at that time to deviate from the original intentions of the Japanese government.

Prime Minister Takaichi's remarks in November of last year, which became a point of contention between Japan and China, are interpreted to mean that Japan could intervene in the event of a Taiwan contingency.

Responding to a question in the Diet at the time regarding a Taiwan contingency, Prime Minister Takaichi stated, "We can also assume a situation where China takes some military action to prevent the U.S. military from breaking a blockade if they come to do so," and added, "If military action is accompanied by the use of warships, I believe it would be a situation where the existence of the nation is at stake."

Following Prime Minister Takaichi's remarks, President Trump did not express concern or criticize China, which was pressuring Japan.

In response, voices of dissatisfaction emerged even from the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, with Itsunori Onodera, Chairman of the LDP's Security Research Council, stating in December of last year, "As an ally, we hope the United States will also send a strong diplomatic message to China with a common understanding."
