Daegu Election Commission inspects ballot box supply sets for local elections [Daegu=Yonhap News]

As of 9 PM on May 14th, the first day of candidate registration for the June 3rd local elections, 5,838 candidates had registered. Among them, 38 candidates had records of tax delinquency in the past five years, had not completed military service, and had prior convictions.

The figure of 5,838 includes candidates for metropolitan mayors, local mayors, and metropolitan and local council members, excluding candidates for superintendent of education and by-elections for the National Assembly.

According to data from the National Election Commission, among the 38 individuals with records of tax delinquency, unfulfilled military service, and prior convictions simultaneously, 28 were running for local council, 8 for metropolitan council, and 2 for local mayor.

Among these, independent candidate Park Moo-bong, running in constituency A of Taebaek City, Gangwon Province, had tax arrears of 99,955,000 won in the last five years. He had not completed his military service and had 11 prior convictions.

Kim Jae-gon, a candidate from the People Power Party running in constituency Da of Bonghwa County, Gyeongbuk Province, had tax arrears of 20,732,000 won in the last five years. He had not completed military service and had 9 prior convictions.

Independent candidate Yang Hae-young (constituency Na, Goksung County, Jeonnam Province) reported tax arrears of 15,711,000 won in the last five years. He had also not completed his military service and had 5 prior convictions.

Among female candidates, who are not subject to mandatory military service, 41 had records of tax delinquency and prior convictions. This includes 20 for local council, 11 for proportional local council, 6 for proportional metropolitan council, and 4 for metropolitan council.

Among these, Son Mal-nam, a People Power Party candidate for constituency A of Gyeongsan City, Gyeongbuk Province, who had the most prior convictions with 3, had tax arrears of 16,377,000 won in the last five years.

Candidates with significant tax arrears over the past five years included Kim Hye-ran of the People Power Party (constituency Na, Changwon City, Gyeongnam Province) with 62,425,000 won, Yang Ah-young of the People Power Party (constituency Ba, Pohang City, Gyeongbuk Province) with 55,528,000 won, and Choi Sun-kyung of the Democratic Party (constituency Ga, Hongseong County, Chungnam Province) with 35,207,000 won. All three of these candidates had one prior conviction.
