The summit meeting between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping was successful, according to a briefing document released by the White House via X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday morning.

The White House document stated that "both sides discussed ways to strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries, including expanding access for American companies to the Chinese market and increasing Chinese investment in American industries," and noted that "leaders of major American corporations also attended part of the meeting."

On Tuesday, aboard Air Force One en route to China, President Trump listed the names of the business leaders accompanying him in a post on Truth Social, stating, "I am going to ask President Xi to open up China so these incredible people can do great things and further develop China." He added, "In fact, I promise you, when we meet in a few hours, that will be my first request."

The White House document on Thursday confirmed that President Trump's request had been fulfilled.

The White House also stated that the two leaders "emphasized the need to continue making progress in blocking the flow of fentanyl precursors into the United States, as well as increasing China's purchase of American agricultural products."

This indicates that cooperation to block drug precursors was discussed, alongside pressure for market opening.

The meeting on this day garnered international attention for China's agreement to the issue of opening the Strait of Hormuz.

The White House announced that "both sides agreed that the Strait of Hormuz must remain open to support the free flow of energy."

It further elaborated that "President Xi also made clear China's opposition to the militarization of the Strait of Hormuz and any attempts to impose tolls, and expressed interest in purchasing additional US crude oil to reduce China's dependence on the Strait of Hormuz in the future."

In a CNBC interview on Thursday in Beijing, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that reopening the Strait would "greatly benefit" China and predicted that Beijing would work "behind the scenes" to exert influence on Iranian leaders. Reuters reported Bessent as saying, "They will do everything they can to help reopen the strait."

President Trump also told Sean Hannity of Fox News in an interview that President Xi "wants to help" and desires the reopening of the strategically important maritime transport route.

Newsmax pointed out, however, that there were no official commitments from China or details on specific actions they would take.

The White House further added in its statement that "both countries agreed that Iran must never possess nuclear weapons."

In terms of completing Iran's isolation, it appears that President Trump's objectives were largely achieved.

However, Taiwan and North Korea were not directly included in the White House briefing document. A Chinese spokesperson stated that President Xi told President Trump that if the Taiwan issue is "not handled properly, it will lead to clashes and conflicts between the two countries, and the entire bilateral relationship will be in serious jeopardy."

When asked by reporters after the summit whether the Taiwan issue was discussed, President Trump did not directly answer while visiting the Temple of Heaven (a former altar for imperial sacrifices in China), which is interpreted as bypassing the Taiwan issue to preserve other tangible achievements.

The issue of North Korea also does not appear to have been included in the official agenda for this meeting. One analysis suggests that with the current trend of recognizing North Korea as a nuclear power, the two leaders may not have found any other matters to discuss.
