  • Kim Tae-heum Campaign "Will hold responsible, including legal responsibility"... Daejeon MBC "Mistake in post-production, apology"

Chungnam Governor Candidate DebateChungnam Governor Candidate Debate [Yonhap News]An incident occurred during the Chungnam Governor candidate TV debate broadcast on Daejeon MBC on the evening of the 21st, where the opening remarks of People Power Party candidate Kim Tae-heum were omitted. Controversy is anticipated as Kim Tae-heum's campaign strongly protested, stating it "undermined election fairness."

Yeo Myung, spokesperson for Kim's campaign, issued a statement on the 22nd, criticizing, "While the opening remarks of Democratic Party candidate Park Soo-hyun were broadcast as is, Kim Tae-heum's opening remarks were entirely deleted. Is editing possible in an election broadcast debate?"

He further argued, "The opening remarks in an election debate are the most crucial segment for conveying a candidate's philosophy, vision, and resolve to voters. If a broadcaster arbitrarily edits a specific candidate's message and deprives voters of the opportunity to judge, it has lost the essence of fair journalism."

He added, "MBC must immediately reveal to the public what criteria and intentions led to the complete omission of Kim Tae-heum's remarks. We will hold them accountable using all available means, including legal responsibility."

Previously, during the Chungnam Governor candidate debate broadcast by Daejeon MBC the previous day, approximately one minute of Kim's opening remarks was omitted in the broadcast.

In response, Daejeon MBC clarified via YouTube channel comments, "It was a mistake made during post-production when editing one NG cut that occurred during the recording process. It is the full responsibility of the director who failed to properly verify such issues before broadcast."

Daejeon MBC stated that they immediately explained the circumstances to Kim's campaign and Kim himself by phone as soon as the incident was recognized, reiterating that "there was no intention other than a simple mistake."

They added, "We sincerely apologize to Kim Tae-heum's campaign and to our viewers for the incident that occurred during the broadcast of this candidate debate. We will immediately establish measures to prevent recurrence and do our utmost for fair and impartial election reporting and broadcasting."
