Two French UN veterans who fought in the Korean War will find their final resting place at the UN Memorial Cemetery in Busan.
The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs announced on the 25th that it will hold a repatriation ceremony for the remains of the late veterans André Dachary and Jacques Grisolle at Incheon International Airport on the 26th, with their interment planned for the UN Memorial Cemetery in Busan.
The late veteran Dachary, who passed away in March of last year, voluntarily participated in the Korean War as an Army soldier in the UN French Battalion from March 1953 to August of the following year.
Stationed in the command section of the 3rd Company of the French Battalion, he was wounded twice just before the armistice and remained with the UN French contingent in Seoul to complete his mission even after the armistice.
The late veteran Grisolle, who passed away in November 2024, fought in the Korean War twice: from April 1951 to July of the following year, and again from March to October 1953.
During his first deployment, he participated in battles such as the Soyang River battle and the "Heartbreak Ridge" battle, receiving two military medals and commendations. In his second deployment, he was active in battles like the Songgok and Junggasan battles. In 2018, he was awarded the Dongbaeg Medal of the Order of National Security Merit for his service.
The government will first hold a repatriation ceremony at Terminal 2 of Incheon International Airport on the morning of the 26th, under the theme "From Here, the Republic of Korea Will Cherish You," to welcome the remains of the two veterans. Oh Kyung-joon, Director-General for Planning and Coordination at the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, will greet them, with the French Ambassador to Korea Philippe Bertoux, defense attachés, and bereaved families also in attendance.
Subsequently, an interment ceremony is scheduled to be held on the afternoon of the 27th at the UN Memorial Cemetery in Busan, presided over by the French Embassy in Korea, with Kang Yoon-jin, Vice Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, among other attendees.
With the interment of the two veterans at the UN Memorial Cemetery, the total number of UN veterans interred there will increase to 37.
