Newsmax reported that the US and Iranian negotiation teams have agreed to a 60-day memorandum of understanding to extend the ceasefire and begin negotiations on Iran's nuclear program, but that President Donald Trump's final approval has not yet been granted.

According to the Associated Press, the news of the agreement comes after US airstrikes on Iran and a series of live-fire exchanges between Iran and its Gulf neighbors this week.

According to Axios, the proposed agreement would be the most significant diplomatic breakthrough since the outbreak of war, but further negotiations appear necessary to address President Trump's demands regarding Iran's nuclear activities.

As of this report, there is no indication that Tehran has accepted President Trump's key demand of abandoning its nuclear ambitions. However, the ceasefire extension is interpreted as a strong indication of a very low willingness to resume public confrontation.

Newsmax reported, quoting US officials, "The President has told the mediators that he needs a few days to think."

In effect, this agreement means a continuation of the current situation, where a nominal ceasefire is maintained during ongoing negotiations, with intermittent clashes occurring.

According to reports, the proposed memorandum of understanding includes provisions that maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz will be "unrestricted," toll collection and harassment will be prohibited, and Iran will be required to remove all mines from the strait within 30 days.

It is also reported that the US maritime blockade will be gradually lifted in conjunction with the resumption of merchant ship activity, and that Iran will commit to not pursuing nuclear weapons development.

Additionally, it is reported that negotiations will prioritize the disposition of Iran's enriched uranium stockpile and the future of Iran's uranium enrichment during the 60-day negotiation period.

The US has also reportedly agreed to discuss sanctions relief and the release of frozen Iranian assets as part of the talks, and discussions on mechanisms to facilitate the delivery of supplies and humanitarian aid to Iran are also expected to be included.

Meanwhile, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent adopted a cautious tone when questioned about the provisional agreement between the US and Iranian negotiation teams at a White House press briefing on Thursday, telling reporters that "it is a mistake to get ahead of the president" before any agreement is signed by President Donald Trump, The Hill reported.

It remains to be seen whether President Trump will accept the offer to resume negotiations rather than a document of surrender.
