Jang Dong-hyuk, Standing Election Committee Chairman, holding a press conference at the central party headquarters (Seoul=Yonhap News) Reporter Lee Dong-hae = People Power Party Standing Election Committee Chairman Jang Dong-hyuk is speaking at a press conference regarding the June 3rd local elections held at the central party headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul on the 31st. 2026.5.31 eastsea@yna.co.kr
Jang Dong-hyuk, Standing Election Committee Chairman of the People Power Party, urged on the 31st, the last weekend before the June 3rd local elections, to "show your resolute action to stop the arrogance and recklessness of the Lee Jae-myung administration and to protect my property and freedom."
Chairman Jang said at a press conference held at the central party headquarters in Yeouido on the same day, "We might not be able to protect it due to even one vote short. There may come a day when you regret not voting, so you must never give up."
Chairman Jang emphasized, "Giving up on voting is giving Lee Jae-myung, who is abusing presidential power, an opportunity to erase all his crimes," adding, "(President Lee) mobilized all sorts of attacks such as malicious dictators and old vested interests against the conservative opposition party. He is trying to divide the people as the election landscape becomes unfavorable. You must judge him."
Chairman Jang continued, "While some people may be happy with rising stock prices, are the people our politics should focus on truly only those on the KOSPI or in the luxury department stores?" he appealed. "Many people are living in the 'triple-high' hell of high exchange rates, high prices, and high interest rates. These are precious people who should be taken care of before anyone else."
Chairman Jang also said to President Lee, "He has seized control of the legislature, government, judiciary, and media, showing extreme arrogance, as if to say, 'What are you going to do about me?' He openly campaigned for the ruling party by visiting markets until three days before early voting." He criticized, "No president in history has ever acted this recklessly."
He then warned, "If the arrogant Lee Jae-myung and the Democratic Party win the local elections and seize control of local governments, they will push to cancel Lee Jae-myung's trials first, and they will strip away the freedoms of the people one by one, transforming South Korea into a massive rationing system." He added, "If we do not protect it now, our descendants will live in a completely different country."
When asked if the turnout for the two-day early voting, which was higher than in the previous local elections, was favorable to the party, Chairman Jang replied, "It is difficult to determine whether it is favorable or unfavorable to any political party based solely on the fact that the turnout has increased, as we need to conduct a detailed analysis by region and age group."
He added, "I believe that the turnout for the main election should also increase, and the public's anger in judging the arrogance of Lee Jae-myung and the Democratic Party should translate into votes. We will strive to get the 2030 generation to come to the polls." He stated, "We intend to focus on delivering messages from the central party and increasing voter turnout for the remaining three days." (Yonhap News)
