Even siblings who have grown up under the same roof and shared meals have different ways of remembering their aging parents. To some children, she was an infinitely devoted and warm mother, while in the memories of others, she remains a cold and oppressive caregiver. Whose memory is the truth?
Both are true. Just as the contradictions and complexities of life cannot be cut and dried into a single, neat sentence, human memory and evaluation are equally multifaceted. How much more so, then, for a grand history intertwined with the blood and desires of countless individuals and the struggles of an era.
The Violence of "If You Think Differently, You're Wrong"
However, the chilling closing remarks of an MBC "public broadcasting" anchor, delivered through the television screen, sliced through this natural truth of life with a single stroke. Invoking the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea, the comfort women issue, May 18th, and Park Jong-chul in succession, he declared like a high priest of judgment, "If you have a different opinion on these matters, it's not just different, it's wrong."
In a democratic nation where freedom of thought and conscience should be as essential as breathing, the media has taken it upon itself to censor the very cognitive structure of the public. If we open the door to history and delve a little deeper, we find that behind the flawless altar they demand, cold facts and bitter shadows always lurk.
Consider the trajectory of the Provisional Government in Shanghai. Behind the noble struggle to reclaim a lost homeland lay a bloody internecine conflict with communists over the so-called "Lenin funds," where they turned their guns on their own countrymen.
How are we to erase the records of numerous factional conflicts and assassinations? If all their approaches were perfectly right, we should be painfully contemplating why we had to passively accept liberation on the chessboard of great powers, rather than achieving independence through our own strength.
The same applies to the May 18th Gwangju Uprising. The bloodshed of citizens resisting the barbarous violence of the military regime is a heartbreaking tragedy. Yet, in the midst of that resistance, four police officers were crushed and died gruesomely when a bus driven by protesters plowed into them, and the reality of violence existed, with police armories being raided to engage in armed conflict. Why should mourning the deaths of innocently destroyed law enforcement and examining the limits of violence in an armed uprising be deemed a "wrong thought" that must be condemned?
The same holds true for the tragic torture and death of Park Jong-chul. The murder committed by state violence is barbarism that cannot be excused by any justification.
However, his tragic death cannot be an unconditional pardon that covers up the fact that he was a radical activist student who had previously supported the firebombing protest at the Busan American Cultural Center and was deeply involved in the radical Guro union strike and the Cheonggye Clothing Union protest. Just because his death was unjust does not mean that the radical ideological trajectory he embraced must be blindly revered and sanctified.
Korea's Public Broadcasting Claims to Be the "Ministry of Truth"
History is not religion. Perfect saints and flawless narratives do not exist in reality. The very process of facing both light and shadow, of coldly debating imperfections to find better lessons, is intellect and freedom. However, the current media and left-wing cartel in Korea, acting as the "Ministry of Truth" from George Orwell's "1984," are forcing a single, uniform answer.
What I truly fear is not the anchor's violent pronouncement itself. It is the world that our ordinary neighbors, who are daily brainwashed by consuming such violent assertions in the name of "news," and the children who will grow up in that society, will create.
What will children learn in classrooms where questions become crimes and different interpretations are branded as heresy? They will grow up, losing the ability to think and doubt for themselves, merely repeating the myths of sanctuaries fed to them by the media like parrots.
Fierce zealots of a horrifying fascism, who readily brandish torches of witch hunts against each other with "You are wrong" if they step even an inch outside the boundaries of thought permitted by the state and media. Can a free future truly exist in a society dominated by a populace, bred as a massive "single camp," stripped of the diversity of thought?
In the face of this chilling and elegant violence that declares "If you think differently, you're wrong," we stand at the threshold of the most bizarre dystopia, strangling human reason in the name of democracy. The end of a society that has lost its questions is, in the end, nothing more than a vast camp of silence.
