The Democratic Party has begun full-scale preparations for the upcoming June 3rd nationwide local elections next year while reorganizing the party by successively launching the Special Committee for Organization Enhancement (SCOE), the Party Member Qualification Review Committee, and the Local Election Planning Group.
Spokesperson Kwon Hyang-yeop announced on the morning of the 11th, after the closed-door supreme council meeting, that these agenda items would be referred to the Party Affairs Committee.
According to Spokesperson Kwon, the closed-door supreme council meeting today resolved to establish the SCOE and the Party Member Qualification Review Committee, and to set up the Local Election Planning Group for next year's local elections.
Secretary-General Cho Seung-rae was appointed as the head of the Election Planning Group.
In addition, Iksan-gap, Jeonbuk, the constituency of lawmaker Lee Chun-seok, who was expelled for suspicions of nominee stock trading under his aide's name and trading stocks using non-public information, was designated as an 'Accident-Prone District Party Chapter'.
The acting head of the district committee, to fill the vacancy left by Representative Lee's expulsion, will be announced at a later date.
Spokesperson Kwon explained, "When a new party leader is elected, the Party Member Qualification Review Committee and the SCOE must naturally be formed. The establishment of these bodies was not solely undertaken due to the case of Representative Lee Chun-seok. Given the local elections next year, the SCOE, the Party Member Qualification Review Committee, and the Election Planning Group are all being formed sequentially."
Furthermore, the 'Preparation Committee for the Election of a Supreme Council Member from the Ranks of Regular Party Members' was also resolved at today's closed-door supreme council meeting.
Representative Jang Kyung-tae was appointed as the head of the preparation committee, and Vice Presidents Lee Hae-sik and Moon Jeong-bok, who are in charge of organization, were appointed as deputy heads. Yonhap News
