The U.S. administration of Donald Trump has highlighted that the Chinese President Xi Jinping and the U.S. President agreed on the "complete denuclearization of North Korea" during their summit last month, in relation to Xi's state visit to North Korea on the 8th-9th.
In response to Yonhap News' inquiry about the Trump administration's stance on President Xi's visit to North Korea, a spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State stated, "In Beijing, President Trump and President Xi reaffirmed their common goal of North Korea's denuclearization."
This is interpreted as a reiteration that the U.S. policy on the Korean Peninsula, which aims for the "complete denuclearization of North Korea," remains unchanged. It also suggests an expectation that President Xi, having agreed to this during President Trump's visit to China from the 14th-15th of last month, will play a constructive role in denuclearization during the North Korea-China summit with North Korean Chairman Kim Jong Un.
A spokesperson for the International Liaison Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China announced today that President Xi will make a state visit to North Korea on the 8th-9th at the invitation of Chairman Kim.
This visit by President Xi is in return for Chairman Kim's visit to Beijing in September last year.
This marks President Xi's first foreign visit this year and is also notable in that this year marks the 65th anniversary of the signing of the Sino-North Korean Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation, and Mutual Assistance.
