The District Attorney for the Central District of California announced Friday that his office is working with the FBI on “multiple fraud investigations.”

District Attorney Bill Essayli also stated in a release that he is working with Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon to conduct a comprehensive audit of the state’s voter rolls.

While Essayli did not offer specifics on the investigations, he said, “We will follow the evidence wherever it leads and prosecute violations of federal election law to the fullest extent possible.”

In an X post announcing the joint investigations, Essayli added, “The state has fought every attempt to ensure only eligible U.S. citizens are registered on the voter rolls.”

He retweeted a post from Dhillon on X, stating, “Yes. There is evidence of election fraud in California. One case we prosecuted last month. More investigations pending.”

The Dhillon post that was quoted referenced a case where Brenda Lee Brown Armstrong, 64, pleaded guilty to one felony charge of paying others to register voters in federal elections.

Prosecutors said she paid homeless individuals in Skid Row to register, and in some cases, used her own address to register them.

This allowed mail-in ballots to be sent to her home, according to the plea deal, as reported by the California Post.

The fraudulent scheme reportedly spanned 20 years. In an interview with the California Post, Essayli said that many of the frauds could have been prevented if the state had shared its voter rolls with his office, adding that a lawsuit against the state for refusing to share the rolls is pending before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

California residents turned out to vote in state and local elections across the state on Tuesday, and as of Friday, vote-counting efforts for the gubernatorial and Los Angeles mayoral races were still underway.
