Police raid Minjung Democratic Party on suspicion of violating National Security Act [Yonhap News Photo]
It was learned on the 13th that police have moved to apprehend executives of the Minjung Democratic Party who are under investigation for alleged violations of the National Security Act.
The Minjung Democratic Party announced in a press release on the same day that "the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office requested arrest warrants for Han Myung-hee, the representative of the Minjung Democratic Party, and Han Jun-hye, the secretary-general, on the 12th."
It was also stated that this followed the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's application for arrest warrants on the 11th on charges of organizing an pro-North Korean group under the National Security Act.
The suspect interrogation prior to arrest (warrant examination) for the two individuals will be held on the 16th at 10 AM and 3 PM, respectively.
The Security Investigation Division of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency has been investigating the Minjung Democratic Party's alleged violations of the National Security Act since 2024. In August of that year, police raided the party headquarters, and in July of last year, they summoned and investigated the representative and party members as suspects.
Police have suspected them of engaging in pro-North Korean activities, such as forming an pro-North Korean organization that demanded the withdrawal of U.S. forces and condemning joint ROK-U.S. military drills as "war exercises for an invasion of the North."
Article 7 of the National Security Act stipulates imprisonment of up to 7 years for praising, encouraging, or propagating the activities of an anti-state organization or individuals receiving instructions from such an organization, and imprisonment for at least one year for forming or joining such an organization.
The Minjung Democratic Party retorted, stating, "The so-called 'Minjung Democratic Party case' was orchestrated by the Yoon Suk-yeol regime to suppress forces critical of the government during the planning and execution phase of a rebellion," adding, "Punishing party officials who are victims of the rebellion as perpetrators is a perversion of cause and effect."
