U.S. President Trump Attending G7 Summit [AP=Yonhap News]
U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated on the 16th (local time) that Iran would not possess nuclear weapons under the cease-fire memorandum of understanding (MOU). He also warned that if Iran attempts to possess nuclear weapons, "a hell of a disaster will occur."
According to Reuters, AFP, and other news agencies, President Trump made these remarks during his meeting with Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on the second day of the Group of Seven (G7) summit and in a Q&A session with reporters.
President Trump stated, "Iran will never have nuclear weapons, nor will it develop, purchase, or take any action to that effect," recalling that this was one of the conditions for him to sign the agreement.
President Trump warned, "If Iran violates this and attempts to possess nuclear weapons, they will pay a tremendous price. A hell of a disaster will occur."
President Trump said the cease-fire agreement with Iran "has now moved to Phase 2" and added, "I think Phase 2 will actually be easier."
He emphasized that "we will not invest any money in Iran" after the MOU agreement. He also assessed that "Iran now has reasonable leadership" and stated that he does not wish for the overthrow of the Iranian regime.
He predicted that Iran's reconstruction would take years and reaffirmed his intention to recover enriched uranium from Iran through future agreements.
He clearly stated his opposition to Israel's recent airstrikes on Lebanon.
Regarding Israel's airstrike on Beirut, Lebanon, he said he expressed his displeasure to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and stated, "He needs to act more responsibly on the Lebanon issue now."
President Trump also suggested that if the Israeli military cannot conduct operations against Hezbollah without causing civilian casualties, neighboring Syria should deal with Hezbollah.
He also dismissed rumors of discord, saying his relationship with Prime Minister Netanyahu is "very good."
President Trump announced that as the Iran issue is somewhat resolved, "now the United States will focus on Ukraine."
President Trump expressed regret over the strong animosity between the leaders of Ukraine and Russia, stating that it is making negotiations for the conflict, which he considered the easiest issue to resolve, difficult.
He urged Russia to "reach an agreement," noting that "Russia has suffered tremendous human casualties, just like Ukraine."
President Trump stated, "I will do my best to resolve the Ukraine conflict," and announced that he plans to have a separate meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on this day.
President Trump, along with other G7 leaders and President Zelenskyy, held a working meeting earlier that morning to discuss support for Ukraine and cease-fire negotiations.
