People Power Party Floor Leader Jeong Jeom-sik takes a drink during a Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly on the 29th. [Photo=Yonhap News]On the 29th, the People Power Party welcomed Democratic Party of Korea Floor Leader Han Byung-do’s announcement to push for a "Special Counsel Act on the National Election Commission" as a party platform in response to the unprecedented ballot shortage crisis, and urged the opposition party to appoint a special counsel recommended by the opposition.
In a Facebook post that day, Floor Leader Jeong Jeom-sik stated, "Today, Democratic Party Floor Leader Han Byung-do announced that they would push for the 'Special Counsel Act to uncover the truth behind the June 3rd infringement of the people's right to vote' as a party platform," adding, "While the Democratic Party has previously avoided our party's proposal for a special counsel by making various excuses, we welcome their decision to finally accept it."
He emphasized, "Our party already proposed a special counsel bill as a party platform on the 9th of this month, immediately after the local elections," and added, "We look forward to an investigation by a special counsel without sanctuary. The fundamental condition for such an investigation is the appointment of a special counsel recommended by the opposition party."
Floor Leader Jeong stated, "There have been numerous instances where they superficially pretended to accept proposals—such as the state investigation into the abandonment of the Daejang-dong appeal or the recommendation of a special inspector—only to let them fizzle out," asserting, "This time, such deceptive ploys will not work."
He added, "In particular, if they attempt a hollow special counsel investigation that tramples on the will of the opposition and the people—similar to the way they sent a mere fax during negotiations for the composition of the second half of the National Assembly—they will inevitably face the judgment of the public."
