U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have agreed to meet for a summit in the United States in the near future, AFP reported on the 3rd (local time), citing the Israeli Prime Minister's Office.

As tensions have persisted between the two leaders recently over how to end the war in Iran, attention is focused on whether the upcoming meeting will serve as an opportunity to realign their wavering alliance.

In a statement released that day regarding their phone call, the Israeli Prime Minister's Office said, "Prime Minister Netanyahu stated that the United States is a bastion of world freedom and that Israel highly values the close relationship between the two nations," adding that "Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Trump have agreed to meet in the United States soon."

It also noted that Prime Minister Netanyahu conveyed a message congratulating the United States on its 250th Independence Day.

Longtime allies the United States and Israel conducted joint airstrikes against Iran on February 28 of this year, aimed at dismantling the country's nuclear weapons development program.

However, discord between the two leaders regarding how to end the war with Iran has recently come to light.

President Trump has publicly criticized Prime Minister Netanyahu in strong terms over the past few weeks, as Israel's continued military operations against Hezbollah—a pro-Iranian militant group in Lebanon—have threatened to derail the peace negotiation framework he had been pursuing with Iran.

With the U.S. midterm elections approaching this November and rising anti-war sentiment at home due to inflation, President Trump is scrambling to bring the conflict to a swift conclusion.

However, Israel threw cold water on the negotiations early last month by bombing Lebanon to target Hezbollah, even as peace talks between the U.S. and Iran were in full swing.

It was reported that President Trump called Prime Minister Netanyahu and harshly berated him, using profanity to ask, "What on earth are you doing?", calling him "crazy," and telling him he was "ungrateful."

Inside and outside of Israel, suspicions are mounting that Prime Minister Netanyahu is being forced to insist on continuing the war because of his ongoing corruption trial.

If he stops the war against Hezbollah, the coalition government that sustains his premiership could collapse, likely leading to his loss of power and an acceleration of his legal prosecution.

Recently, The New York Times (NYT) also reported that Israel attempted to assassinate an Iranian delegation in April, while peace negotiations between the U.S. and Iran were underway.

The media outlet reported that the U.S. intercepted this attempt by Israel and hurriedly delivered a warning to Iran through mediating countries.
