Representative James Comer (R-KY), Chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, issued a sharp rebuke on Sunday, criticizing Senate Republicans for failing to pass the "Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act."

Appearing on Fox News' "The Big Weekend Show," Comer questioned why Republican senators have failed to unite behind the election integrity bill, which requires proof of citizenship and voter identification for federal elections.

"Are you that weak? That is what I want to ask every single Republican senator. Are you that weak? Are you so weak that you’re afraid you’ll lose your seat in your home district if you vote to require people to show a valid ID to vote?" Comer asked during the broadcast.

"If you’re that weak, you shouldn’t be a U.S. Senator," he added.

Comer stated that he and his fellow House Republicans have received little information from Senate leadership regarding the future progress of the bill.

He noted that the only thing he hears from Senate leadership is that "they don't have the votes," unless, he added, Senate Minority Whip John Thune (R-SD) is speaking "one-on-one" with House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA).

Comer expressed skepticism toward Thune's claim that they could not secure 50 votes, suggesting that it is possible for Republicans to change Senate rules to allow the bill to pass with a simple majority.

Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC), one of the Republicans skeptical of the SAVE Act, stated, "In my view, anyone who has actually implemented a voter ID law knows that it is now a joke to claim that this bill could be implemented in time without causing massive disruption to elections, and ironically, undermining confidence in the election process," adding that, in his view, the bill is "dead."

Existing voting laws already stipulate that only citizens can vote in federal elections, and critics have continuously pointed out that the requirements in the SAVE Act would be an overreach that infringes upon the authority of state governments and state legislatures.

However, House Republicans are preparing another attempt to pass the legislation.

Speaker Johnson announced on Sunday that the House intends to include the SAVE Act in a new continuing resolution to pass it "once again." This is a strategy designed to bypass the Senate Democrats' filibuster by structuring the bill to comply with budget reconciliation rules. 

Johnson emphasized that election integrity is a top priority for both House Republicans and President Trump, and said he believes a more comprehensive bill could help rally Senate Republicans.

"I hope the Senate will come together and pass this bill so the American people can have confidence in the integrity of our elections," Comer said, expressing his hope that Senate Republicans will ultimately support the measure.
