Former President Donald Trump announced on Friday his endorsement of Representative Andy Biggs (R-AZ) for the upcoming Arizona Republican gubernatorial primary scheduled for later this month.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, "It is my great honor to endorse Andy Biggs, a respected America First Congressman and the next Governor of the wonderful State of Arizona, where I won by a landslide!"

Since the end of Donald Trump's presidency, the Republican Party has struggled to win statewide elections in Arizona, with the notable exception of Trump himself. In recent years, candidates endorsed by Trump in both gubernatorial and senatorial races have suffered defeat.

However, it appears that Trump is significantly trailing behind Biggs. While Biggs holds firm conservative views, he is considered somewhat more traditional than previous Trump-backed candidates like Kari Lake.

In some respects, he even displays moderate tendencies. He was the only Republican lawmaker to sign on as an original cosponsor of the 'Peace on the Korean Peninsula Act' (H.R. 1841), a bill to which most Republican members have voiced clear opposition.

Although Congressman Biggs is widely known as a staunch conservative who served as the chair of the Freedom Caucus, he reportedly supports the resolution because he agrees that past pressure tactics on North Korea have failed to produce substantive results. Furthermore, he backed the bill only after language was added to clarify that it would have no impact on the status or presence of U.S. Forces in Korea, which had been the primary concern when the resolution was first introduced.

On Truth Social, Trump praised Biggs, stating, "As a highly successful civic leader, lawyer, former state representative, former state senator, and now a respected U.S. Congressman (and one of the most respected, at that!), Andy has served his community with dedication, backed by numerous awards and a career filled with victories!"

He added, "As your next Governor, Andy will work tirelessly to focus on economic growth, tax and regulation cuts, promoting American-made products, strengthening American energy dominance, maintaining border security, stopping illegal immigration, establishing law and order, and supporting our great military, veterans, law enforcement, election integrity, and the always-threatened Second Amendment."

Biggs' competitors in the primary include Scott Neely, a homebuilder and small business owner involved in border wall construction projects; David Schweikert, an eight-term U.S. Representative who previously served as the Maricopa County Treasurer; and Ken Miceli, a businessman who is highlighting his strengths as an 'executive' rather than a career politician.

The winner of the Republican primary will face the incumbent Democratic Governor, Katie Hobbs, in the general election this November.

President Trump also endorsed Representative Paul Gosar (R-AZ) for reelection, calling him a "MAGA warrior."

This year’s Arizona primary election will be held on Tuesday, July 21, from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM. The deadline to request a mail-in ballot is Friday the 10th, and the deadline for early in-person voting is Friday the 17th at 7:00 PM.

Mail-in ballots must be received by election offices or designated drop-boxes by 7:00 PM on July 21. For in-person voting, voters should bring a valid ID to their polling place; anyone in line by 7:00 PM will be permitted to vote.

Arizona utilizes a semi-open primary system, meaning that independent voters with no party affiliation can choose to participate in either the Democratic or Republican primary.
