U.S. President Donald Trump stated on the 27th (local time) that Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) should not allow the Senate to begin its summer recess until it passes the "SAVE America Act" or, "furthermore, abolishes the filibuster."

Through Truth Social, President Trump increased pressure on Senate Republicans, urging them to remain in Washington until the election security bill, which he has made a top legislative priority, is approved by Congress.

President Trump wrote, "John Thune must ensure the U.S. Senate does not 'leave Washington' until the 'SAVE America Act' is passed or, even better, the 'filibuster is abolished.'"

"Then, the Republican Party would be able to swiftly pass every agenda they have dreamed of, including the full and bold implementation of the 'SAVE AMERICA ACT,' budget bills, and the ever-looming debt ceiling crisis," he added.

Trump further argued that if Democrats regain control of the Senate, they will abolish the legislative filibuster, adding, "Those stupid Democrats would do it from day one, and they would be in disbelief at how lucky they are to have gained this Senate leadership. Remember, stupidity always leads to defeat and death!"

According to Newsmax, the President's appeal comes as several conservative senators are pressuring Leader Thune to cancel the Senate's traditional August recess until a vote on the "SAVE America Act" is completed.

Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) declared that he would oppose any attempt to send senators home before a vote on the bill takes place.

Lee wrote on X on Sunday, "To @LeaderJohnThune, I will object to any and all attempts to start the August Senate recess until the Senate passes the 'SAVE America Act'."

Lee has gained the support of fellow Republicans, including Senators Rick Scott (R-Fla.), Ashley Moody (R-Fla.), Jim Banks (R-Ind.), Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), and Darline Graham (R-S.C.), all of whom argue that Congress should remain in session until the election integrity bill is brought to the Senate floor.

The "SAVE America Act" mandates the submission of proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration, requires a photo ID for voting, and strengthens regulations on mail-in ballots.

House Republicans have approved various versions of the bill and even recently employed reconciliation procedures, but the bill has been repeatedly delayed in the Senate due to unanimous opposition from Democrats. Currently, Republicans would only need 50 votes to pass the SAVE America Act, but they are reportedly one vote short.

According to a report by The Hill, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) has criticized the bill as "Jim Crow 2.0," while Senator Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) argued that the bill lacks the 60 votes required to override a Senate filibuster and is effectively "dead on arrival" without bipartisan support.

Former President Trump has repeatedly urged Republicans to abolish the filibuster, arguing that doing so would allow the party to swiftly enact the "SAVE America Act," pass budgets, and resolve the national debt ceiling issue.

In addition to Tillis, a total of four Republican senators—Susan Collins (R-Maine), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), and Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.)—are currently opposed to the bill.

Senator Thune has countered that Republicans do not have enough votes to abolish the filibuster and has argued that it is the Democrats, not the Senate Republican leadership, who are blocking the election reform bill.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt warned recently that President Trump’s "patience is wearing thin" regarding the Senate’s failure to advance the bill, further intensifying the pressure on Republican leadership.
