The former President Yoon's side and the opposition parties strongly protested the National Assembly's Legislation and Judiciary Committee's review of CCTV footage showing the former president's refusal to be arrested, calling it "public humiliation of a former president" led by the Democratic Party.
In particular, the new party, Freedom and Innovation (leader Hwang Kyo-ahn), raised the level of criticism, saying, "It seems the Democratic Party wants to stand tall above all institutions without seeing anything," and "If you intend to ignore all laws and regulations, then frankly declare dictatorship."
According to Yonhap News and others on the 1st, Democratic Party members of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, including Chairperson Choo Mi-ae, visited the Seoul Detention Center in Uiwang, Gyeonggi Province, that morning for an on-site inspection for about two hours to confirm whether special treatment was provided to former President Yoon during his detention.
During the on-site inspection, the Democratic Party's Legislation and Judiciary Committee members reviewed CCTV footage showing the former President Yoon refusing to be arrested. Previously, the special prosecutor had claimed that former President Yoon refused to comply with the arrest warrant execution while wearing only his underwear.
In response, former President Yoon's legal representatives issued a statement that day, stating, "The Legislation and Judiciary Committee's resolution to review and disclose CCTV footage, installed for the safety of inmates and the maintenance of facility order, to verify allegations of special treatment and obstruction of investigation, is clearly illegal and violates the Act on the Execution of Sentences and the Treatment of Offenders, the Act on Disclosure of Information, and the Personal Information Protection Act."
The legal representatives also explained, "According to the Act on the Execution of Sentences, CCTV can only be used to the minimum extent necessary to guard inmates or facilities," adding, "The Constitutional Court also emphasizes the prevention of leakage or misuse of video records by limiting camera angles and establishing regulations for access to the central control room."
The People Power Party also strongly protested. Park Joon-tae, a People Power Party lawmaker on the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, criticized the move as having political motives, stating, "This is an attempt to continue the 'rebellion' public opinion campaign ahead of the local elections," and sharply remarked, "It is a humiliation of a former president."
Meanwhile, Yonhap News reported that some video footage showing former President Yoon's appearance inside the detention center was released on online communities that day. In the related video, former President Yoon was briefly captured sitting calmly, wearing a prison uniform top and bottom.
Yoon Tae-jun, the young spokesperson for the new party Freedom and Innovation, commented, "The Democratic Party, which is resorting to leaking contents of detention center CCTV, is it that they lack confidence in the law?"
Spokesperson Yoon asked, "The Democratic Party must clearly reveal with what authority they reviewed the detention center CCTV," and added, "It is questionable whether the National Assembly, which is neither an investigative agency nor a court, has the right to verify this."
He continued, "Forgetting that they are a political party, they are excessively interfering, as if they can only be satisfied by confirming all information," and pointed out, "It would be a problem even if the Democratic Party only reviewed it quietly, but they are engaging in media play by disclosing the situation at the time. The Democratic Party is once again trying to humiliate President Yoon."
He further added, "The Democratic Party is constantly crossing legal boundaries to exercise power and harass its political rivals," and warned, "If the Democratic Party continues to engage in private sanctions, someday citizens who oppose the Democratic Party will also impose private sanctions on the Democratic Party. If you do not want to see a lawless zone of utter chaos, the Democratic Party should wait quietly for the judgment of the law."
