Kim Tae-san, Standing Representative of the National Alliance for North and South Korea

China recently held a grand Victory Day celebration. Dictators in communist countries like China and North Korea often use Victory Day events as a tool to conceal their own insecurities and flaunt their power.

This time, however, Putin and Kim Jong-un's participation in the Tiananmen Square spectacle drew more attention than usual. In South Korea, there have been all sorts of speculations and evaluations regarding the Tiananmen event. Many professors and doctors are attaching great significance to the meeting between Xi Jinping, Putin, and Kim Jong-un, elaborating at length. Of course, all their words and writings have their own logic.

However, I assert that this year's Chinese Victory Day celebration was merely a political show created by the combined anxieties of cornered, long-term dictators, and nothing more.

First, let's look at Xi Jinping, the host of the event. The host of such a grand celebration shows no satisfaction or smiles. His demeanor is always filled with heavy worry. Xi Jinping is a long-term dictator suffering from inescapable pressures in all aspects, including politics and economics.

Russia's Putin is also a long-term dictator who has killed countless of his own citizens through a three-year war of aggression and is now in a dire situation due to international pressure.

North Korea's Kim Jong-un is a cornered, long-term dictator barely clinging to power by selling the blood and lives of his nation's youth.

As can be seen, North Korea, China, and Russia are all nations in decline. Therefore, Xi Jinping, Putin, and Kim Jong-un are all insecure dictators living with the constant risk of losing power.

Humans naturally associate with those in similar circumstances. Beggars associate with beggars, and drug addicts band together. In other words, the commonality of their circumstances is what brought Xi Jinping, Putin, and Kim Jong-un to Tiananmen Square.

Currently, Xi Jinping, Putin, and Kim Jong-un are under continuous surveillance and pressure from the United States, a giant surveillance state. In other words, the dictators of rogue states, pursued by the police, gathered at Tiananmen to soothe their anxious hearts and put on a show of friendship. It is nothing more and nothing less.

Originally, despite being communist countries, China and Russia were like cats and dogs, constantly at odds. North Korea, with its pride in being at the forefront of containing the U.S., has always sought to gain benefits between these two great powers. North Korea, China, and Russia have never been close; they have always had divergent dreams.

The reason these three leaders gathered at Tiananmen was, first, to alleviate their political anxieties, however slightly. Second, they met only to secure their own respective interests.

Until now, Kim Jong-un has completely disregarded China and only associated closely with Putin. Therefore, he has always harbored some unease about China. Kim Jong-un came to Tiananmen to resolve all of that in one go.

Putin, too, is an international pariah due to the Russia-Ukraine war. He simply wanted to make China his supporter through this opportunity. Xi Jinping also wanted to put on a show to demonstrate that he and the CCP are still robust. However, Xi Jinping, Putin, and Kim Jong-un are all setting suns hanging on the western horizon.

Just wait and see. The show is just a show, and nothing more. The Tiananmen Square spectacle will go down in history as the final show of long-term communist dictators.

Tomorrow, Xi Jinping will still be plagued by domestic and international political and economic pressures, facing the risk of losing power. Putin will continue to struggle, caught by the tail of the tiger in the Russia-Ukraine war. Kim Jong-un will suffer from insomnia every night amidst inescapable economic hardship and political insecurity.

The United States will continue to pressure these three dictators of rogue states, and eventually, the fortress of dictatorship will crumble.
