The National Assembly's Ministry of Interior and Safety Committee held a plenary session on the 22nd and, led by the Democratic Party of Korea, passed an amendment to the Government Organization Act, which includes the abolition of the Prosecutor's Office and the reform of economic ministries.

The amendment includes provisions to abolish the Prosecutor's Office and establish the Major Crimes Investigation Agency (MCIA) and the Prosecution Agency, thereby separating the investigation and prosecution functions of the prosecution.

The name of the Ministry of Economy and Finance will be reverted to the Ministry of Finance and Economy, as it was before February 2008, and the budget function will be transferred to the Planning and Budget Office under the Prime Minister's Office.

The Financial Services Commission will transfer domestic financial functions (including the Financial Intelligence Unit) to the Ministry of Finance and Economy and will be reorganized into the Financial Supervisory Commission to perform financial supervision functions.

In addition, the amendment includes the establishment of the Ministry of Climate, Environment, and Energy, the abolition of the Korea Communications Commission and the establishment of the Broadcasting, Media, and Communications Committee, the change of name and reorganization of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, and the revival of the Deputy Prime Minister for Science and Technology.

The People Power Party protested, claiming the Democratic Party is hastily pushing for government organization reform.

Representative Joo Ho-young cited the follow-up measures for the abolition of the Prosecutor's Office as an example and criticized, "We say we 'learn from history,' but we are not learning anything." He added, "I can confidently say that the same phenomenon as the Yoon Suk-yeol administration's announcement to increase medical school quotas will occur. They have created a situation that cannot be resolved."

Representative Park Deok-heum stated, "All bills are being passed unilaterally led by the Democratic Party, and this should not happen." He continued, "If legislative dictatorship proceeds in this manner in an institution of public opinion elected by the people, it may be acceptable now, but if it accumulates, it will face great resistance from the public."

The Democratic Party countered, accusing the People Power Party of "hindering state affairs."

Floor leader Representative Yoon Kun-young emphasized, "It has been 100 days since the new government was launched, and I believe it is time to let them work. That is yielding in politics." He added, "The approach of 'We must oust the President, therefore everything is impossible' should not be taken."

Representative Lee Hae-sik retorted to the People Power Party, "They keep calling it hasty, but the bills proposed by lawmakers and the government have not been significantly amended within the State Affairs Planning Committee." He sarcastically added, "Before worrying about the government organization reform bill, the People Power Party should worry about their own party's organizational reform."

The People Power Party repeatedly requested the holding of hearings and public hearings during remarks on the proceedings and debates, but when these requests were not accepted, they did not participate in the vote and walked out.

The amendment is expected to be submitted to the plenary session on the 25th after undergoing a systemic and textual review by the Legislation and Judiciary Committee. Yonhap News
